Derby Public Library to host nature reading series book discussion April 21

DERBY - In collaboration with the Kellogg Environmental Center, Derby Public Library will be hosting the first part of the 2025 Naturally Nature Reading Series at 6:30 p.m. April 21.

The Reading Series will focus on led book discussions and workshops.

The first in our series will be focused on “Braiding Sweetgrass” by Robin Wall Kimmerer and will begin with a book discussion hosted by the Derby Public Library.

The Library is at 313 Elizabeth St.

Book Summary: Drawing on her life as an indigenous scientist, and as a woman, Kimmerer shows how other living beings―asters and goldenrod, strawberries and squash, salamanders, algae, and sweetgrass―offer us gifts and lessons, even if we've forgotten how to hear their voices.

'Setting the World by the Ears'

DERBY - Celebrate Women’s History Month with a special living history performance of the 19th century abolitionist Maria Weston Chapman at 3 p.m. March 30 at Kellogg Environmental Center, 500 Hawthorne Ave.

Award-winning writer and historical interpreter Laura Rocklyn will perform “Setting the World by the Ears” about this 19th century activist.

The year is 1855 and Maria Weston Chapman is preparing to return to her home in Weymouth, Mass. after seven years of living in Europe.

During those years abroad she has seen her children complete their educations and marry, and she has found powerful new international allies for the cause that is so dear to her heart: Abolition.

The preparations to return to her beloved but far distant home prompt memories of her childhood in Weymouth, and of the turbulent early days of her involvement in the Abolition Movement in Boston.

Chapman revisits the triumphs and fears that came with her work with the Boston Female Anti-Slavery Society.

She reflects on how her strength in the face of violence and her passion for the cause to which she has devoted her life took her from Boston to New York and Philadelphia and, eventually, to the capitals of Europe, in pursuit of justice.

Derby Neck Library to host bird walk at Osbornedale State Park

DERBY - Ages 8+ are invited to join us and the New Haven Bird Club for a bird walk field trip! 

We’ll meet in the parking lot of the Kellogg Center, 500 Hawthorne Ave., and take a stroll around the grounds, then make our way to Osbornedale Park. 

The entire walk will take about an hour. Bring your binoculars, sunscreen, and walking shoes!

Kellogg Environmental Center in Derby to host artist's exhibiition

DERBY - Come enjoy original artwork by Agnes Wnuk at the Kellogg Environmental Center, 500 Hawthorne Ave.  

A collection of her acrylic and watercolor pieces is the featured exhibit for the month of June. Guests are invited to enjoy the works and walk the Kellogg Estate gardens. 

A ‘Meet the Artist Reception’ will be held from 2-4 p.m. June 26. Guests will visit the Center to view the paintings of florals and garden scenes, meet Agnes to learn about her methods and inspirations, and enjoy her travel sketchbooks documenting her trips and travels. 

Each year Connecticut’s Historic Gardens collaborative hosts a poster contest promoting CT Historic Gardens Day. 

Agnes is the featured artist on this year’s poster.  CT State Parks is proud to have the Osborne Homestead Museum as the featured site and Agnes’ original painting is part of her show at the Center. 

In the last six years, Agnes has expanded to exploring colored pencil, oils, pastels, watercolors, and urban sketching. 

She has sketched on location in Bermuda, St. Maarten, Mallorca, Spain, and Key West, as well as around New England, New York State and Colorado. She also took part in the annual Urban Sketchers Symposium in Amsterdam in July 2019, completing an entire sketchbook during a weeklong excursion.

Learn about archaeology at Kellogg Environmental Center program in Derby

DERBY - Join us June 19 at Kellogg Environmental Center for an in-person program where participants will be able to learn about archaeology and how to analyze past cultures through hands-on activities.

Participants will meet under the tent at the Kellogg Environmental Center where they will take part in a simulation of an archaeological dig.  

Will you be able to deduct which family occupied your site based on the materials you find?  

This event is family-friendly, and all materials will be provided.  

Once participants solve this mystery, they will be led inside where they will learn about the Freeman Family of Black Governors, an archaeological site in Osbornedale State Park.  

Here participants will be able to see and touch examples of real artifacts recovered during excavations.

Learn about local history, wildlife on CT Open House Day in Derby

Osborne Homestead Museum

DERBY - Travel back in time and explore the transformation and expansion of a modest 1800s farmhouse into an elegant 20th century Colonial Revival style home.  

Learn about Frances Osborne Kellogg’s profound attention to detail, the architectural career of her husband Waldo Kellogg, and his design influences in the home at 500 Hawthorne Ave.  

The Osborne Homestead Museum will be participating in the 18th annual Connecticut Open House Day—a state-wide celebration of art, history, and tourism—June 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  During this one-day event, the museum will offer its ever-popular architecture tours.  

 

Located adjacent to the Museum, the Kellogg Environmental Center will also provide a program for families about the diversity and design of bird nests.  

Using its collection of nests, naturalists will help guests understand construction types, structure, and material selection related to the needs of the birds that made them.  The program takes place at 11 a.m. in the Center’s classrooms and the display of nests will be available throughout the day and weekend.  

Additional activities highlighting animal architects will be provided to enjoy at one’s leisure that day.  

 

Whether a home improvement Do-It-Yourselfer looking for inspiration or a romantic about Romanesque Revival style come to the Osborne Homestead Museum and learn about this Colonial Revival style home. 

Connecticut Open House Day is sponsored by the Connecticut Office of Tourism and is designed to broaden awareness of Connecticut’s exceptional art, culture, and history.  

This special day encourages residents to become ambassadors who share their newfound discoveries with visiting family and friends.

DEEP facilities to host 'Valley Views of 1902' presentation Saturday in Derby

DERBY - The Osborne Homestead Museum and Kellogg Environmental Center will host a  presentation, “Valley Views of 1902,” at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 28.  

 

In 1902, Naugatuck River Valley Area residents and most likely Frances Osborne Kellogg, an amateur photographer, collected a series of photographs stored as fragile glass stereopticon slides.  

Due to advancements in digital technology these images can now be shared as a PowerPoint presentation. The slides celebrate everyday activities in the Lower Naugatuck Valley, with an emphasis on Derby.  

They highlight important buildings and people at work in fields, stopping at local businesses, bicycling in the park, and viewing the original Stevenson Dam (among other similar activities).   

 

Join docent Patricia Sweeney of the Osborne Homestead Museum in learning from this special archival collection of farm workers, young women, immigrants, and African Americans from 120 years ago.
