Shelton History Center to host "Shelton Celebrates" event Saturday

Join us for the opening of a brand new exhibit at Shelton History Center in honor of #America250! 

Housed in the Brownson House, “Shelton Celebrates! How We’ve Remembered the United States’ Birthday” is an exhibit exploring and examining how the people of Shelton have looked at the events of the American Revolution from the Colonial Revival at the end of the 19th century to the Bicentennial in 1976.

We’ll also be joined by historian Kevin Johnson, a veteran of the State Library’s History and Genealogy Unit. 

For nearly 20 years, Johnson has brought history to life through his powerful reenactment of Jordan Freeman, an African American man who played a vital role in defending Fort Griswold and New London during the Revolutionary War.

Light refreshments will be served. Admission is free, suggested donation of $5.

Oxford Cultural Arts seeks entries for Dog Days of Summer exhibit at library

The Oxford Cultural Arts Commission invites you to celebrate the sunniest season with us in our upcoming exhibit “Dog Days of Summer” — a joyful tribute to animals living their best lives in the summer sun!

Whether it’s a pup splashing in a pool, a cat basking in the heat, or a turtle sunning on a rock, we want to see how animals thrive under summer skies. 

All species welcome. All styles encouraged. From framed photos to bold mixed media — if it’s art and it’s ready to hang, we want to see it!

 Exhibit Dates: May 31 – August 23

Artist to exhibit collage series at Plumb Memorial Library in Shelton

SHELTON - Plumb Memorial Library will be exhibiting the works of artist, award-winning author, and educator Steve Parlato during the month of February.

Parlato will also be discussing his creative process and the methods he uses to craft his work in a special presentation at 11 a.m. Feb. 10. He will present a PowerPoint presentation along with his poetry and answer questions about his artwork.

The public is invited to attend; registration is not required.

The 16-piece portrait collage series, “We Are Not Disposable” each show a Black American whose life was changed due to racial violence. Parlato uses his poetry and artwork to promote conversations about racism, with the goal of fostering connection and opening minds.

The Library is at 65 Wooster St.

Local artist to exhibit work in October at Oxford Baking Company

 

Mixed media artist to exhibit work at Kellogg Environmental Center in Derby

DERBY- All are invited to visit mixed media artist Karen Kalkstein’s exhibition of artwork at Kellogg Environmental Center, 500 Hawthorne Ave. 

Her collages, wall-hangings, and sculptures created from natural and human-made material will be exhibited Feb. 4-28. 

Using items that have been collected from her walks through nature Karen creates beautiful, other worldly images of the environment. 

A ‘Meet the Artist Reception’ will be held from 1-3 p.m. Feb. 12.

The public is invited to visit the exhibition and meet Karen to learn more about her inspirations and the methods used to capture the beauty of nature and the feel of the outdoors. 

Visitors may also enjoy a walk around the grounds and trails of the Kellogg Environmental Center and Osbornedale State Park before or after the reception to see the beauty of winter landscapes as captured by Karen and her works. 

Karen graduated as an art major from Scripps College in California and earned a MA in art education at New York University. 

She has instructed elementary and high school art and has also taught private classes for children and adults. For 20 years she had a custom tile business designing, hand making, and glazing ceramic tiles for clients across the country. 

She has shown her artwork on the east and west coasts and her works are in numerous collections including the Johnson & Johnson Corporate Collection in New Jersey. Karen lives and works in Stamford and Waitsfield, Vt.

Kellogg Environmental Center in Derby to exhibit art made of repurposed trash

DERBY - Artist Sarah Schneiderman repurposes plastic trash and debris to create artwork that addresses social, political, and environmental issues.  

Her work will be displayed in the Kellogg Environmental Center throughout the month of January.  

There will be a reception with both an in-person and a virtual option from 2-4 p.m. Jan. 8 where Sarah will discuss her work and creative process.  Registration information is below.  

Please specify whether you will be attending the in-person or virtual reception.

Sarah’s work has been on exhibit around the country, from Seattle, Washington to Clarkston, Ga. and from Santa Monica, Calif. to Damariscotta, Maine.  

She continues to use trash as her medium while exploring non-toxic and non-plastic adhesives.  Her concern for the environment has expanded beyond art to lifestyle choices, including eating a vegan diet, using refillable containers, and repurposing household materials.  Sarah calls Glastonbury and Bonaire, Dutch Caribbean, home.

DERBY -  Visit Kellogg Environmental Center  throughout December to view photographer Peggy Boissoneau’s exhibit, “Inspire. Explore. Discover.” 

Boissoneau has traveled the globe for pleasure and business during her corporate IT and finance career and she continues to capture unique experiences through her photography. 

The Center will host a virtual reception Dec. 19 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. via Zoom. 

Join online as Boissoneau discusses her travels around the world and how she captured the planet’s nature and cultures through her photography.

Oxford Cultural Arts to host reception for 'Art Heals' exhibit at Oxford Public Library

"Art Heals" exhibit will run Oct. 2-Dec. 4.
A reception will be held from 5-7 p.m. Nov. 2. The event is free and open to the public.

The theme is "Art Heals” with art works that reflect on times of overcoming challenges, physically and mentally. 

The art on display shows us how the creative process is used to help heal from emotions from everyday stress, trauma or overcome disabilities.

Oxford Public Library is located at 49 Great Oak Road. 

Art exhibit on tap in October at Kellogg Environmental Center in Derby

DERBY - Visit the Kellogg Environmental Center throughout the month of October to view the work of award-winning artist Mary Burk Smith.  

Her clay and collage pieces reflect the many components of the natural world.  Her virtual gallery will be accessible through the DEEP website starting in October.   

At 3 p.m. Oct. 16 the Center will host an in-person reception where visitors will be able to meet Smith and gain a deeper understanding of her work. 

Smith works in a variety of mediums, including clay, mixed media, printmaking, and assemblage.  

With more than 50 awards to her credit, she is a member of the New Haven Paint & Clay Club, the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, Connecticut Women Artists, the Guilford Art League and the Blue Ridge Mountain Art Association of Blue Ridge, Ga. 

In addition, Smith has taught art courses at Southern Connecticut State University and Housatonic Community College.  

A Norwalk native, she began her art studies at the Silvermine School of the Arts and Housatonic Community College. She went on to get her bachelor’s and master’s degree in studio art from Southern Connecticut State University. She also attended the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, Tenn. Her works are held in public and private art collections in the United States, Japan, and the Philippines.

Kellogg Environmental Center in Derby to host exhibit of landscapes

DERBY - Visit the Kellogg Environmental Center during the month of August to view photographer Mallorie Ostrowitz‘s exhibit, “From the Expansive to the Intimate: Landscapes of America.”  

Her landscapes and macro Earth surfaces demonstrate the wonders of her travels throughout North and South America.

Ostrowitz is a member of West Hartford Art League and Connecticut Women Artists.  

Born and raised in New York City, Mallorie studied art at the City University of New York.  

She received her BA in Fine Arts from Queens College and a Master of Fine Arts in Painting from Herman Lehman College.  

She has shown her work across the country and has pieces in the Embassy of Peru in Washington, D.C. and in the Consulate of Peru in Hartford.  Her work has also been featured in several magazines and newspapers including FX Magazine, Artis Magazine, South Dakota Magazine, the Glastonbury Women’s Club Calendar, Otis Elevator annual report, and the Hartford Courant.

Artist to exhibit work, host workshop at Plumb Memorial Library in Shelton

Pop artist Michael Albert 

SHELTON - Plumb Memorial Library will host an exhibition of the works of American pop artist Michael Albert through August.

Albert’s art has evolved from doodles with pen and ink, colored pencils, and magic markers, to serious wax oil drawings, to the cubist mosaic cereal box collages for which he has become known.

Albert is the author and subject of an autobiography, An Artist’s America. 
The display at Plumb includes a selection of 16 of his limited-edition prints featuring art created over the past 25 years, and is the only exhibit of his works in Connecticut this summer.

Albert has also developed a traveling art enrichment program he calls the “Modern Pop Art Experience” where he talks about his art and runs hands-on collage workshops for people of all ages. 
He brings his workshop to Plumb Memorial Library, 65 Wooster St., from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 17.
