Monster Pinch Pots

SHELTON - Create Monster-Faced Pinch Pots using air-drying clay on Sept. 12 and 19 at Plumb Memorial Library.

This is a two-part workshop. Participants will return for the second workshop to decorate them after they’ve dried.

Caregivers must remain with their child for the duration of both programs.

Please wear clothing that can get dirty or wear a smock! (Registration is for BOTH listed dates. This is a two-part workshop; participants must attend both for finished craft.)

Art exhibit on tap in October at Kellogg Environmental Center in Derby

DERBY - Visit the Kellogg Environmental Center throughout the month of October to view the work of award-winning artist Mary Burk Smith.  

Her clay and collage pieces reflect the many components of the natural world.  Her virtual gallery will be accessible through the DEEP website starting in October.   

At 3 p.m. Oct. 16 the Center will host an in-person reception where visitors will be able to meet Smith and gain a deeper understanding of her work. 

Smith works in a variety of mediums, including clay, mixed media, printmaking, and assemblage.  

With more than 50 awards to her credit, she is a member of the New Haven Paint & Clay Club, the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, Connecticut Women Artists, the Guilford Art League and the Blue Ridge Mountain Art Association of Blue Ridge, Ga. 

In addition, Smith has taught art courses at Southern Connecticut State University and Housatonic Community College.  

A Norwalk native, she began her art studies at the Silvermine School of the Arts and Housatonic Community College. She went on to get her bachelor’s and master’s degree in studio art from Southern Connecticut State University. She also attended the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, Tenn. Her works are held in public and private art collections in the United States, Japan, and the Philippines.

Seymour Public Library slates fun programs for children in April

SEYMOUR - The Seymour Public Library has scheduled a variety of fun and educational children's programs in April.

     

4/6 -10:30 a.m. - Science Snoopers ‘Animal Babies.’ Natural science, story and craft for ages 2 and up.  Must be able to sit and listen.

4/6 - 4 p.m. - StoryKids’ Book Club for K-Grade 2. Book talks, craft, and a snack. Child must have some reading ability.

4/7 -  3:45 p.m. - YA Origami – create Origami art – for ages 10 and up.

4/11 - 10:30 a.m. - Animal Show on the Go!  Live animals visit us – for all ages.

4/11 -  2 p.m. - Danny Magic! An amazing comedic magic show – for all ages.

4/12 - 10:30 a.m. - Lionheart Puppets presents ‘The Little Red Hen,’ a classic tale.

4/12 - 4 p.m. - Nutmeggers’ - YA Book Club for Grades 5 - 8. Book talks, craft, and a snack - features the Intermediate Nutmeg Nominees.

4/13 - 10:30 a.m. - Cartooning Clay Workshop! For ages 5 and up - limited space.

4/13 - 4 p.m. – BookChatters’ Book Club for Grades 2-4. - Book talks, craft and a snack - features the Magic Tree House Series. 

4/18 - 10:30 a.m.- Lynn Lewis - Music and Movement for ages 0-6.  A fun time for everyone!!

4/20 - 4 p.m. - ‘The Club’ book club for grades 8 and up.  Teen advisory - Book talk, snacks, and more!

Derby Public Library offers clay workshop for teens

DERBY -The Derby Public Library invites all young adults ages 12 to 17 to a Teen Maker In Clay workshop, Thursdays, March 17 and 24, from 4 to 5:30 PM. 

Participants will be molding and painting clay sculpture. 

This two-session workshop will be led by Valley Arts Council President Rich DiCarlo. 
All materials will be provided. 
Registration is requested.
