Recuperation journey: I went, I saw, I dug

The second annual Diamond Dig at Marks of Design in Shelton Thursday was a lot of fun.

With all of the proceeds going to The Valley Goes Pink how could I not donate $40 to get a bucket and dig for a 1.04 carat diamond?
I may not have found it, but I did capture quite a few colorful gemstones hidden in the sand that can be turned into pieces of jewelry.

The Valley Goes Pink is Griffin Hospital's grassroots initiative to raise awareness about breast health and support for the Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness in Derby.

Goldsmith Kate Marks, owner, Marks of Design, strikes a pose at the sand-filled trough where gemstones and the diamond were hidden.
Last year's Diamond Dig raised $10,000 for The Valley Goes Pink, Marks said.

I hope there's a third annual Diamond Dig; I'll be there.

Recuperation journey: A bit o' bling to celebrate

I treated myself to something fun to celebrate my cancerversary this weekend.
I'm now a seven-year survivor of breast cancer.

I purchased a pair of heart earrings made by a friend, Dajana Damjanovich of Oxford.

Here they are:
Dajana Design photo

She started her jewelry business - Dajana Design - in 2016, the same month Ralph and I launched our Valley Voice newsletter.
Dajana creates beautiful, one-of-a-kind earrings, bracelets, and necklaces.

Visit her Etsy shop here:

Dajana manages the Seymour Pink Gift Shop at 3 Franklin St., Seymour.
The shop is opening after a winter break from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. today.

The nonprofit Seymour Pink, a community's fight against breast cancer, is an all-volunteer organization.

Recuperation journey: Diamonds are a girl's best friend

To the untrained eye this blurry photo may seem to indicate I found the grand prize in the Diamond Dig Thursday at Marks of Design in Shelton.
But sadly I didn't find it; this is a quartz gemstone, and that's sand on my palm from digging into a trough filled with sand for the aforementioned diamond.
I read that a lucky woman did find it, but she wasn't identified.

I "dug up" two pieces of clear quartz and two peridot gemstones.
Participants purchased a pail like the one shown and the price, $40, was a donation for The Valley Goes Pink.

The fundraiser for The Valley Goes Pink was sponsored by Kate Marks, owner of Marks of Design at 389 Bridgeport Ave., Shelton.

The Valley Goes Pink is an initiative to raise awareness about breast cancer and support The Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital in Derby.
As a 6.5-year survivor of breast cancer I was more than happy to support this worthwhile cause.

*Stay tuned for more photos in an upcoming issue of The Valley Voice newsletter.
