Sharing some good news from the Valley Arts Council:
The unnamed behemoth that controls electricity turned the power back on this afternoon at the Gallery@37, 37 Elizabeth St., Derby.
As a member of the arts council, I say "Hooray!"
And to quote Tangelene Ramsay, gallery administrator: "Having the lights off was a hardship; however, it was also a blessing. It gave us an opportunity to look at our future and make some changes. I, for one, am extremely excited at where these changes are taking us. Stay tuned folks! There is so much more to come!"

Valley Arts Council prez pens post that touches many readers
DERBY - Valley Arts Council President Rich DiCarlo wrote on Facebook about an experience he had Friday at the Gallery @ 37.
His post and photo reprinted with permission below got many Facebook likes.
That man way down at the corner is Joe, a widower, veteran, and a gentle soul who strolled into the gallery to admire a cat painting that Johnny had on display in the gallery sidewalk sale.
He told me all about his kitten and the joy it brought into his life and how he now can't wait to get home. He looked at the painting and told me how one of the kittens looks just like his friend ... I told him it was only fifteen dollars... He said he couldn't afford it so he walked away ... He got two doors down ...
I wonder if UI knows that.
'Hey Joe!' I called. He walked back. I handed him the painting and told him 'you forgot your painting.'
Every once in a while...little things take precedence ... Yeah our lights are out and the arts council needs the money... [but] there are many things in life more important than the money."

Artists serve up 'Slice of Life' at gallery in Derby
Valley Arts Council President Rich DiCarlo, left, presents a second place People's Choice Award to Derby artist George Pudimat Friday at the Gallery@37 in Derby. Pudimat was recognized for his creative "Zero to Eighty" concept piece pictured below. DiCarlo described it as "visually transforming."

DiCarlo said he was pleased with the turnout. More than 100 folks came by the gallery to take in the artwork, meet the artists, vote for their favorite piece, and of course enjoy some wine and cheese (and pizza!).
The gallery was rocking throughout the evening with entertainment provided by talented guitarists Jonathan Siksay and Jon Hollywood.
They performed original pieces and popular songs from yesterday and today.

Valley Arts Council's next exhibit is about 'life'
Reception slated in March at Gallery@37 in Derby
DERBY - As a member of the Valley Arts Council I'm looking forward to participating in our next show in March at the Gallery@37, 37 Elizabeth St.
I enjoy taking photos with my point-and-shoot, and have learned how to mat and frame prints properly with the help of our fearless leader, President Rich DiCarlo.
This promises to be a unique show. The theme is rather "generic," so anything goes.
As DiCarlo said on the Gallery's Facebook page:
"Life is a series of moments.
They are good and bad, happy and sad. It's people places and things, it's animals, nature, it's everything! We want you to
Capture a moment through your art or photography.
The exhibit is open to all artists, photographers and poets! Visit www.valley arts council.org for details and application.
Opening Reception: Friday, March 27th. Art drop-offs at Gallery @37, 37 Elizabeth St., Derby:
Thursday 3/19, Friday 3/20 Saturday 3/21 - check for times to be posted soon
VAC members $20 first entry, $10 for second.
Non-members $35 first entry- $10 second.
Limit 2 entries per artist."
