Massaro Community Farm in Woodbridge to hold beekeeping presentation


WOODBRIDGE - Come meet the new state bee inspector Paula Wolf at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Massaro Community Farm. She'll be at our first bee workshop of the season!
At this first class we'll go over how to handle your new package or nucleus of bees. All classes in person and hands on in our bee yard (weather permitting) where we'll go over all aspects of beekeeping.
Offered by Ted Jones of Jones Apiaries (Farmington), Ted leads you through all steps of beekeeping from spring through fall. Whether you're a newbie or a veteran, all levels and ages welcome.
First class begins at 9:30 a.m. All other classes will begin at 9 a.m. Wear long pants and close-toed shoes (even when it's warm). We have veils and gloves for you to borrow. 
Suggested donation of $10/pp supports ongoing education at Massaro Farm.

Bethany Farm and Nursery in Woodbridge to host Christmas Market



Calling all makers, artists, crafters, and builders!
We are so excited to announce our very first Winter Holiday Market at Bethany Farm and Nursery!
For three Saturdays in a row, beginning Saturday, December 7, we will be hosting a wonderful winter market for our community!  
Bethany Farm and Nursery is located at 229 Seymour Road, Woodbridge.
Our market will be held indoors in our heated retail shop. We will have @just2galsmobilebartenders here making holiday-inspired cocktail and mocktails, hot cocoa, coffee, hot cider, and more!!
To the general public: We hope you will join us this holiday season! 
The farm will be selling wreaths, Christmas trees, garland, and so much more! We will have a bonfire going throughout the day.
Pictures with Santa Claus will also be offered! Specific dates and time to be announced next week!
To spread additional Christmas cheer, we will be transforming our retail shop into a winter wonderland, full of local makers, creators, small businesses, and artists selling their wonderful goods for the holiday.

WOODBRIDGE - Join us [at Massaro Farm, 41 Ford Road] for a fall cooking demo, creating delicious food while also reducing our food waste. 
We'll focus on using those veggie parts you routinely discard. And we'll discuss new and innovative ways to reduce food waste before it even reaches your table!

Massaro Community Farm slates 8-week Ansonia After School Program


WOODBRIDGE - Massaro Farm's Ansonia After School Program for grades 1-6 starts Wednesday, March 29 from 3:30-5:30 p.m. There is still room to sign up your student!

Farm after school programs allow your child to have a hands on experience here at Massaro Community Farm. 

Participants spend time getting our garden beds ready for sowing, planting seeds and seedlings, caring for chickens, exploring the nature trail, learning basic survival skills and other fun and educational activities.

Derby Public Library to host presentation on gardening Wednesday


DERBY - Seed Starting & Composting will be presented by Massaro Community Farm of Woodbridge at 6:30 p.m. this Wednesday at Derby Public Library.
The presentation is for all ages.

Unravel the mysteries of gardening during this informative session, taught by Advanced Certified Master Gardener Rachel Ziesk, who has been teaching gardening classes for over 10 years.
Learn about seed starting - what to start indoors, direct seed outdoors, or plant in the fall - and the basics of composting.
You can practice these skills later in the free community garden located on the Caroline Street side of the Library!
The Library is at 313 Elizabeth St.

Suggested donation is $10 per person at the door.
At 10 a.m. March 25 - Package and Nuc installation; if temps allow we will perform a hive inspection.

Massaro Community Farm in Woodbridge to hold 6-week winter program for kids


WOODBRIDGE - Join us at Massaro Farm for our Winter Explorers program! 

This six-week class will be held on Sundays beginning Jan. 15 from 10 a.m.- 1 p.m. Program will skip Feb.19 and conclude on Feb. 26.
Encourage outdoor learning and discovery by sending your child to Massaro Community Farm for its Explorer Series! 

This program will engage children ages 6-11 to embrace outdoor activities, no matter what time of year. Cost is $165 per child for six weeks. 

Participants will identify animal tracks on the trail, build a survival shelter, enjoy (safe) time by the fire, observe the change in seasons, and understand how our lives impact environmental health. 

Led by environmental educators Jim Matheson and Ashley Antoine.

Cabrera announces $1.4M in grants for Beacon Falls, Bethany, Woodbridge



HARTFORD - State Sen. Jorge Cabrera, D-Hamden, Monday announced three towns will receive grant funding through the Small Town Economic Assistance Program.

The program supports small towns for economic development, community conversation, and quality-of-life capital projects. 


A combined $1.4 million will be released to Beacon Falls and Bethany for road improvements and Woodbridge for renovation of the Woodbridge Center Gym.

 

"I'm grateful to Governor Lamont for making these approvals for the towns of Beacon Falls, Bethany and Woodbridge," said Cabrera. "The towns are also contributing to these important projects which will benefit drivers and pedestrians in Beacon Falls and Bethany, and all those who enjoy using the Woodbridge Center Gym."

 

Funding through the STEAP grants will support:

· Beacon Falls: $500,000 in state funding is approved for a road improvement project at Church Street. This will be matched by $580,000 from the town.

· Bethany: $404,696 in state funding is approved for road improvements that will ensure access to essential facilities and roads. This will be matched by $101,174 from the town.

· Woodbridge: $500,000 in state funding is approved for the renovation of Woodbridge Center Gym. This will be matched by $106,687 from the town.

Cabrera represents the 17th District.
