Seymour pantries expand gardens in response to need for produce
The Little Free Pantry on Skokorat has enlisted Team Rubicon, including town resident
Lauren Cust, to add seven 4x8 garden beds. When Team Rubicon arrives on June 3, they will
provide the labor needed to expand the current garden to more than triple its current size.
The Blessing Pantry is also adding raised beds. They are taking their expansion project one step further by starting a Weeding Wednesday initiative where residents are invited to work in the garden while enjoying light refreshments and musical entertainment.
Both free pantries opened at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in response to the massive
surge in individuals experiencing food insecurity in the Valley.
Since opening in 2020, the Blessing Pantry and Little Free Pantry on Skokorat have become
hubs in the community. Both field concerns from neighbors regarding barriers to food access and increasingly unaffordable costs of groceries, housing, utilities, and child care.
The goal of All in for Seymour and the broader All In Movement is to advocate for everyone to have
access to a safe and affordable place to live, a place where access to food is secure, and a
place in the decision-making that affects our lives.
The Little Free Pantry on Skokorat is run by Seymour native Jenny Rice along with her husband and two children out of their home at 58 Skokorat St.
Their garden can be accessed by following the signage near the pantry.

A special delivery arrived today
An artistic and extremely thoughtful friend absconded with my faded, aging garden gnomes when I was in the hospital for my surgery.
Today he returned them, freshly painted and refurbished. He even created new limbs for two who sadly lost their limbs to the snow blower a few years ago.
This is Fred. He has a pet frog.
The turtle is looking a bit faded and worn now. He might need some work.
I may have to separate these two.
This guy is my oldest gnome. He was a gift many years ago from my late mother - and the only ceramic one I have.
This was a special delivery I'll never forget!

Gnutty for gnomes, that's me
I've long been attracted to them. They make me smile.
And I've collected quite a few pieces of the garden statuary over the years. Easily amused? Maybe.
While shopping Tuesday I went to check out the solar lighting and while in that department I spied some gnomes! And they were on clearance!
I had to get one.
I bought this "gnome on a stick" for my garden in the front yard.
And it was half-price. Score one for the gnome collector! Maybe he needs a name.
On Wednesday I went to Lizzie's Corner Consignment and Gifts in Seymour to consign a few things. I saw this guy (below) reading a book and sitting on two more books and had to get him to add to my collection.
I looked up garden gnomes on Wikipedia and this is what I found:
"A garden gnome, or lawn gnome, is a figurine of a small humanoid creature, usually wearing a pointy hat, displayed for the purpose of ornamentation on front lawns or in gardens. These figurines originated in 19th-century Germany, where they became known as Gartenzwerge (garden dwarfs). The application of the term gnome in English is first attested in the 1930s."
