Hazardous waste collection in Ansonia postponed to Nov. 14

Due to the forecasted weather conditions of heavy winds and rain associated with the nor’easter expected this Friday into Saturday, the Fall Household Hazardous Waste Collection scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 26 has been canceled.

We want to ensure that residents and staff remain safe. We appreciate your understanding. The next Household Hazardous Waste event will be held at Ansonia Transfer Station, 1 North Division St. on Saturday, Nov. 14.

'Turnback Tuesday' features Derby City Directories

Turnback Tuesday is reminding us of a great resource at the Derby Public Library, the Derby City Directories.

The library has an incredible collection dating back to 1872. These directories are a wealth of information. When doing research about a family member, look up their name and you should be able to find their address and possibly where they worked. They have a fantastic amount of advertising and some include maps.

The library is searching for these missing volumes: the years 1978, 1979, 1982, 1989, 1995 and 2016.

Monkey Hugs Valentine Drive launches for children at Yale New Haven Hospital

The 20th annual Monkey Hugs Valentine Drive to benefit area children in need has begun. 

Stuffed monkeys are being collected between now and the end of February.

Coordinators are holding this year’s collection in honor of one of its biggest supporters, David Guliuzza, previous owner of Pilgrim Bar-B-Que on Main Street in Ansonia.

David recently passed away at the young age of 57.

This year, Michael’s Jewelers located at the Southbury Green, 775 Main St. South, is also collecting stuffed monkeys.
Donations can be dropped off in a barrel located inside Michael’s.
As always, plush monkeys can be ordered on Amazon through Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital (YNHCH) wishlist.

Griffin Hospital in Derby collecting gloves, mittens for local children

Help keep little hands warm this winter

DERBY - The Safe Kids Greater Naugatuck Valley Coalition in Griffin’s Community Outreach & Parish Nurse Department is looking for help in collecting new pairs of gloves and mittens for 500 children in Headstart, local school readiness, and day care programs as part of its winter safety children's program.

Pairs of new children's gloves (ages 3-7) are being collected on a holiday tree in Griffin Hospital dining room, 130 Division St.

The drive ends Dec. 30 and donations will be given to every child participating in the program during the first two weeks of January.

Turnback Tuesday gives you a look at one of the components in an upright acoustic piano.

This part is called a bridle strap or bridle tape. They are small fabric straps with a leather end, its function is to aid in the movement of other action parts.

Another interesting item in the Library's collection.

Griffin community thanked for support of gloves, mittens drive for children

Keeping Little Hands Warm this Winter

A warm and cozy thank you to all the Griffin Health caregivers and members of our community for their support of this year's Griffin Health Community Outreach and SafeKids Greater Naugatuck Valley Gloves & Mittens Drive.

More than 200 pairs of gloves and mittens were collected at Griffin Hospital in December.

They were distributed throughout the Valley this month, including at the TEAM Inc. HeadStart program where children used their new gloves to play Winter Safety BINGO recently.

Derby Silver Co. items on display at Derby Public Library

DERBY - Derby Public Library has on display some items made at the Derby Silver Co.

These beautiful objects are on loan from the Derby Historical Society’s collection.

The Derby Silver Co. started in 1872. They made mirrors, combs, tableware, tea sets, flatware, cups including trophies and candlesticks to name a few. Their products could be found all over the world.

The Library is at 313 Elizabeth St.

Troop 25 Scouts in Shelton to hold can, bottle drive Saturday

SHELTON - BSA Scouts from Troop 25 will be collecting redeemable cans and bottles to earn money for their Scouting adventures!
