This Friday between 3-6 p.m., tweens and teens are invited to the library during its closed hours to play team laser tag.
They are divided into two teams and take turns using our laser tag equipment to play Capture the Flag! The library lights are dimmed, and the teens and tweens have free reign of the library and can play in any part of the building, except for staff only areas and the children’s room.
The children's room is designated as a “safe zone” where kids can go if they have lost all of their lives or need to rest.
The Library is at 313 Hawthorne Ave.

Turnback Tuesday visits the old St. Mary’s School that was located on the corner of Cottage and Elizabeth Streets.
The school was built/dedicated in 1897 with the 1st graduating class in 1901. Prior to the school being built, the students used the basement of the church.
The first image shows the crossing bridge connecting different sections of the school. The second image is of two girls attending the school with their backs towards Cottage Street under that crossing bridge.
In 1953, a new school was built, and the old one was removed in 1969, where the parking lot of the church is today.
These photos are a recent donation to the Library in memory of the Farley family. Images were taken in the early 1950s.
Thanks goes to the Derby Public Library staff for sharing interesting local history each week.

DERBY - The Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP) at Griffin Hospital is looking for volunteers to provide additional support for elderly patients.
Research shows that between 30 and 50 percent of seniors can experience a decline in their physical and cognitive abilities during a hospital stay.
HELP is a comprehensive, evidence-based, patient care program that provides important connections between volunteers and patients, including meal time assistance, daily orientation, therapeutic activities, walking and exercise, to help patients maintain their optimal level of well-being.
HELP volunteers also work in partnership with the doctors and nursing staff to highlight issues specific to geriatric care and to provide education to patients and their families.
Anyone 18 years and older is eligible to volunteer for HELP.
No previous medical experience is required, and training and supervision are provided. Volunteers are required to give a minimum six-month commitment of one four-hour shift per week.
The program is most needed on weekdays from 4-8 p.m. Limited day shifts are also available.
College students looking to enter the medical field are encouraged to apply as this opportunity will provide hands-on patient care experience. College scholarship incentives are also available.
To apply or for more information, call 203-732-1553.
