ANSONIA - Mayor David S. Cassetti officially swore in Lieutenant James Frolish Jan. 26 at City Hall. 

Frolish is a 22-year member of the Ansonia Police Department and his current assignment is overseeing professional standards, accreditation with the state, training, and the Detective Bureau. Congratulations Lt. Frolish.

Ansonia observes Transgender Day of Remembrance

Mayor David S. Cassetti and the City of Ansonia observed Transgender Day of Remembrance Saturday morning by raising the Transgender Pride Flag at City Hall and issuing an official proclamation recognizing Sunday, Nov. 20 as Transgender Day of Remembrance in Ansonia.

Transgender Day of Remembrance memorializes all transgender people who have lost their lives to transgender related violence. A list of transgender people who were lost to such violence in 2022 alone was read at the ceremony by Corporation Counsel John Marini.

The Transgender flag will be flown at City Hall for the next week in honor of Ansonia’s transgender community, and all victims of discriminatory violence.

The colors of the flag are blue, pink and white, and described by the flags creator- an American trans woman named Monica Helms- as follows:

“The stripes at the top and bottom are light blue, the traditional color for baby boys. The stripes next to them are pink, the traditional color for baby girls. The stripe in the middle is white, for those who are transitioning or consider themselves having a neutral or undefined gender.”

Derby Cultural Commission hosts Irish flag raising, dancers outside City Hall

DERBY - Despite the drizzle it was a great day for the Irish Thursday outside City Hall as the Cultural Commission hosted a flag raising and energetic performance by talented students from the Mulkerin School of Irish Dance.

The St. Patrick's Day ceremony celebrated the generations of Irish immigrants who contributed to the growth of Derby.

Labor Day holiday delays Derby trash, recycling pickup by one day

DERBY - Derby City Hall and all city offices will be closed on Monday, Sept. 6 in observance of Labor Day.

Trash and recycling pick up will be delayed one day during the week of Sept. 6.

The transfer station will be closed Monday, Sept. 6.

Cassetti announces reopening of city buildings, in-person meetings in Ansonia

Ansonia Mayor David S. Cassetti Thursday announced the full reopening of city buildings on Aug. 2 and return to in-person meetings Sept. 1.

American Legion Post 50 of Ansonia to host Flag Walk on Memorial Day weekend

ANSONIA - The Gordon-Visselli American Legion Post 50 of Ansonia is hosting a Flag Walk this year to honor our war dead during the Memorial Day weekend. 

Schools, organizations, businesses, veterans, and members of the public are invited to walk. 

Bring a U.S. flag of any size, or military flag to join in. Patriotic colors: red, white, and blue, or veterans’ garb, is the uniform of the day.

The walk will be on May 30, starting at Nolan Field in Ansonia at 11 a.m. and proceed along the usual Memorial Day Parade route, ending at Veterans Park next to Ansonia City Hall, where a ceremony will be held. 

It is an estimated 20-minute walk that will be escorted by Ansonia’s bravest, the Ansonia Fire Department. This is a fun and easy way to commemorate those “Who gave all”. Participants should be at Nolan Field 15 minutes prior to stepping off.
Whether two, 20 or 200 people, the Gordon-Visselli American Legion Post 50 is committed to paying homage to those men and women and their families for their ultimate sacrifices.

Please join in on this casual yet meaningful event. Family participation is encouraged.
