Valley Parish Nurses at Griffin Hospital to celebrate 30th anniversary

Valley Parish Nurse Program at Griffin Health will celebrate its 30th anniversary from 1-4 p.m. Oct. 13./  Contributed photo

DERBY - The Valley Parish Nurse Program at Griffin Health will host a 30th Anniversary Celebration from 1-4 p.m. Sunday at Griffin Hospital, 130 Division St.
Recognized as the longest-running parish nurse ministry in the world, the celebration will feature displays about how the more than 30 active Parish Nurse Programs affiliated with Griffin Health have helped their community over the past three decades.
Light refreshments will be served throughout the afternoon.

'Whole person health care'
Started as a vision of the Rev. Fred Erson, former Director of Pastoral Care at Griffin Hospital, to provide “whole person health care,” the Valley Parish Nurse Program began in the fall of 1989 under the direction of Jan Sharkey, RN.
The program grew from five parishes and six nurses to more than 40 churches and hundreds of active nurses and health cabinet members at parishes in Shelton, Derby, Ansonia, Seymour, Oxford, Naugatuck, New Haven, Waterbury, Meriden, Middlebury, Southbury, and Hamden.
Parish nurses serve as a health care resource and referral person to their churches and community.

Free screenings
The goal of the parish nurse is to keep people healthy through education and preventative medicine practices, including offering free health screenings such as blood pressure, and to connect people to needed resources when appropriate.
In 1999, The Valley Parish Nurse Program expanded its services with the purchase of a Mobile Health Resource Van by Griffin.
The van allows members of Griffin’s Community Outreach Department and the Valley Parish Nurse Program to conduct health screenings and provide health education practically anywhere.

In 2006, Griffin purchased a larger, better-equipped van that has increased the frequency and types of health screenings.
“The Valley Parish Nurse Program provides us with a really unique dimension to health care,” said Griffin Hospital President and CEO Patrick Charmel. “Parish nurses are volunteers that live and work with people in their community and they develop a level of trust that allows them to connect, intervene, educate and understand the specific health care needs of their neighborhood.”

The goal of the HiM is to influence men to see their physician annually, and to be screened for various diseases that respond better to treatment if detected early.

Griffin Hospital in Derby to offer free hernia screenings

Griffin Hospital to offer free hernia screenings April 25./ Contributed photo

DERBY - Griffin Hospital will host a free hernia screening event from 5-8 p.m. April 25 at the hospital, 130 Division St.
The screenings will be conducted by area surgeons specializing in hernia treatment.
The test takes about 10 minutes and participants will receive information and referrals if there is a suspected hernia.

A hernia occurs when an internal organ or other body part protrudes through the wall of muscle or tissue that normally contains it. Most hernias occur within the abdominal cavity, between the chest and the hips, or the groin.
“It is estimated that 5 million people in the country have an abdominal hernia, but only about 700,000 of them seek medical treatment each year,” said Griffin Hospital Chief of Surgery Dr. Richard Salzano. “It can be very painful to live with a hernia and potentially life-threatening, so we’re hosting this free screening to encourage anyone who believes they have a hernia to come in and have it checked.”
A hernia in the abdomen or groin can produce a noticeable lump or bulge that can be pushed back in, or that can disappear when lying down. Laughing, crying, coughing, straining during a bowel movement, or physical activity may make the lump reappear after it has been pushed in.

More symptoms of a hernia include:
  • Swelling or bulge in the groin or scrotum
  • Increased pain at the site of the bulge
  • Pain while lifting
  • Increase in the bulge size over time
  • A dull aching sensation
  • A sense of feeling full or signs of bowel obstruction
  • In the case of hiatal hernias - when the upper part of your stomach bulges through the large muscle separating your abdomen and chest (diaphragm) - there are no bulges on the outside of the body. Instead, symptoms may include heartburn, indigestion, difficulty swallowing, frequent regurgitation, and chest pain.
Hernias occur in a higher frequency in men between the ages of 40 to 59 years of age, but approximately 2 percent of all women will have an inguinal hernia at some point in their lifetime.
If left untreated, hernias can get bigger over time, become more visible and can cause serious problems, including blocking the intestine, pinched blood vessels and the hernia can break through the skin.
Interested individuals must make an appointment, which will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis.
To make an appointment, call 203-732-3443.

Logan to host senior fair Wednesday at Warsaw Park in Ansonia

ANSONIA - A Valley tradition for more than three decades aimed at helping area senior citizens make the most of their golden years will return to Warsaw Park Wednesday.

State Sen. George S. Logan, R-Ansonia, will host the annual Senior Health and Wellness Fair from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 17 at Warsaw Park, 119 Pulaski Highway.
The fair annually draws hundreds of seniors who can take advantage of numerous free services geared toward their health and well-being.

Logan, a Republican whose 17th District includes Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Bethany, Derby, Hamden, Naugatuck and Woodbridge, said he’s honored to carry on the longtime Valley tradition.

“This free event is now an established tradition for Valley seniors,” Logan said. “It started more than 30 years ago by former state Senator Gary Hale. My predecessor, former state Senator Joe Crisco, continued the tradition to make this event better and better.
"I then picked up the baton because it’s a great way to help Valley seniors get their flu shots, get free health screenings and get key information about health services in our region. So tell a friend. Tell a neighbor. Join us at Warsaw Park on Wednesday.”

This year’s senior fair will feature more than 50 vendors to arm seniors with information and screenings to help them live their best lives.
Vendors will include the Naugatuck Valley Health District, administering flu shots; Griffin Hospital, offering colon screenings; the state Office of Healthcare Advocate, who will discuss identify theft and how to protect oneself from it; Connecticut Society for Respiratory Care, offering lung function tests; My Eye Doc, offering vision screenings; TEAM Inc., providing information on volunteer care-giving services and Meals on Wheels program; and Yale-New Haven Hospital.

There will be a free lunch for all who attend.
Seniors in Ansonia and Derby needing a ride to the fair can call Valley Transit District at 203-735-6408 for a lift.

For more information about the fair, contact Peggy Tibbals, director of public affairs for the Senate Republicans, at 860-240-8884 or by email peggy.tibbals@cga.ct.gov .
