Griffin Hospital in Derby to offer free prostate cancer screenings

DERBY - Griffin Hospital will host free prostate cancer screenings with a sports tailgate feel from 4-6 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital, 350 Seymour Ave.

Prostate cancer screenings are recommended for men at 50 years old. 

Men at higher risk, including African-American men and men who have a first-degree relative (father or brother) diagnosed with prostate cancer before age 65, should be screened at age 45. 

Men at a very high risk (multiple family members diagnosed with prostate cancer before age 65 years) should be tested at age 40.

In addition to the screenings, participants and family members can enjoy a tailgate party buffet at the Center for Cancer Care. 

The screening is sponsored by Griffin’s Health Initiative for Men (HiM), which encourages men to have an annual physical and to raise awareness about men’s health issues such as prostate cancer and colorectal cancer.

“We strongly encourage the men in our community to take advantage of these free screenings,” said Dr. Joseph Camilleri, Urologist, Griffin Faculty Physicians. “As the second-leading cancer killer in men, prostate cancer is a serious disease, but it can be successfully treated if caught at an early stage. This event will be a combination of preventative screening and education, so men know what symptoms to look for and they can share this information with friends, family, and neighbors.”

The screening will take 10-15 minutes. Space for the free screenings is limited; early registration is encouraged.

About Prostate Cancer

Approximately 1 in 7 men in the U.S. will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. As with most cancers, early diagnosis is important to improve chances of cure. 

Screening, although controversial, is important because early prostate cancer usually causes no symptoms.

Griffin Hospital to hold Men's Health Day at The Sports Center in Shelton

DERBY - Griffin Hospital’s Health Initiative for Men (HiM) will be giving out free game passes and chances to win gift cards to men who take part in free screenings at its Men’s Health Day June 22 from noon - 4 p.m. at The Sports Center of Connecticut, 784 River Road, Shelton.

Held in recognition of Men’s Health Month, the event will feature a series of health information tables and free health screenings, Body Mass Index (BMI), blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar. 

For each station completed, attendees can earn a free $10 gift card from the Sports Center, which can be used at most of the Center’s attractions such as the driving range, mini golf, and batting cages.

There will also be drawings throughout the day for gift cards to Home Depot and The Sports Center.

About The Health Initiative for Men (HiM)

In an effort to help inspire men to have an annual physical and to raise awareness about men’s health issues such as prostate cancer and colorectal cancer, Griffin Hospital launched the Health Initiative for Men, a community-wide preventive health care effort. Everyone is invited to submit a picture of their “MO” (aka mustache or facial hair) for a chance to win great prizes. Real or fake, all “MOs” are welcome. 

Simply email a photo to him@griffinhealth.org by Nov. 30 to be entered into a contest for three prize baskets.

HiM hosts this fun contest to raise awareness about men’s health and funds for free men’s health screening and education.

“In the U.S, men die five years earlier than women on average, and for largely preventable reasons,” said Griffin Hospital Chief Medical Officer Frederick Browne, M.D. 

“According to statistics, 1 in 9 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime, testicular cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in young men, and three out of four suicides are committed by men. These statistics show just how much the men’s health crisis needs our attention.”

Griffin Hospital in Derby marking 'Movember' to raise awareness, funds

DERBY - Griffin Hospital is hosting a MOvember contest to raise men’s health awareness and funds for the Health Initiative for Men (HiM).

MOvember is a nationwide effort to promote men’s health by bringing back the glory of the moustache (or ‘MO). This contest is open to everyone – hospital employees, physicians, volunteers, friends and family.

Prostate cancer.Testicular cancer.Poor mental health. Physical inactivity. These are some of the biggest health issues faced by men. Together we're tackling them face-first.

Starting Nov. 2, contestants can enter the “Show Your ‘Mo” competition for an entry fee of $5.

The Real Deal: Grown moustaches that start on Nov. 1 or later (contestants much purchase their entry relatively clean shaven).

Pre-existing condition: Contestants who already have a moustache.

The Faux Mo: A moustache crafted from whatever materials you’d like. LET YOUR CREATIVITY RUN WILD!


There are three ways to register:

Contestants must submit a photo of their ‘MO no later than NOON on Nov. 30. Photos can be emailed to Christian Meagher at cmeagher@griffinhealth.org, sent via interoffice mail to the Communications and Public Affairs Department, or you can contact Christian at X7431 to set up a time for him to come and photograph your ‘MO.
Vote for your favorite Mo.

From Dec. 1-4, the submissions will be on display in the Dining Room and on the Hospital Intranet. They will be voted on through $1 ballots.
The winners will be announced on Dec. 7 and will receive prizes, including free meals at the Hospital Dining Room!

So, get GOing on your ‘MO’ing and help Griffin Hospital improve the health of men in our community!
