Griffin Hospital in Derby seeks volunteers for olive oil, diabetes study

DERBY - The Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center at Griffin Hospital is seeking volunteers for a study on the effect of different types of olive oil on heart health and blood pressure in adults at risk for Type 2 Diabetes. 

Participants will eat food prepared with different types of olive oil and have testing done before and after each meal, and will come to the PRC for three tests between June and August. Participants will be paid $120. 

Volunteers must be non-smokers between the ages of 25-75 years.

Griffin Hospital mobile health van to visit Shelton Farmers Market

SHELTON - Griffin Hospital’s Mobile Health Center will visit the Shelton Farmers Market on Canal Street over the next few months. 

Parish nurses will provide free blood pressure readings as well as health information on various topics including breast cancer awareness and sun safety.

The Mobile Health Center is a custom built Winnebago that travels to various locations throughout the Valley, such as senior centers, shopping plazas, companies, and community events to offer free preventative health services and promote well-being in the community.

It is scheduled to be at the farmers market from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 11, Sept. 8, Oct. 13, and Nov. 3.

Health information offered by the Mobile Resource Center will focus on a specific topic each week, but staff will be available to discuss any health questions.

“Griffin Hospital is person-centered. We promote prevention and wellness in addition to medical treatment. We look forward to meeting everyone and enjoying the fresh and healthy food available at the Farmers Market,” said Margaret Sessa, RN, of the Griffin Hospital Community Outreach Department.

Family Fun and Health Day slated at Derby Green Farmer's Market

DERBY - Derby Green Farmer's Market will host a Family Fun and Health Day from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday. The Green is on Elizabeth Street.

Not only can people purchase healthy food for the week, but they can also listen to music, play fun kids games with face painting, do yoga, get a balloon animal made just for them, and attend story time. 

There will be free blood pressure screenings, and healthy living and nutrition activities. 
The Derby Fire Department will also be there to do a Touch-a-Truck event.

Master's Table President James Fedak, Jr. said in an email: "Starting in January 2017 Master's Table will provide two monthly meals, the second and fourth Sundays of each month except for December."
