'Turnback Tuesday' features history of Flag Day, June 14

Turnback Tuesday reminds us that today is Flag Day.

During the American Revolution, the colonists were fighting under a number of flags. The 2nd Continental Congress was looking to unify under one flag.

On June 14, 1777, a resolution was passed stating that “the flag of the United States be 13 stripes alternating red and white” and that “the union be 13 white stars in a blue field.” President Woodrow Wilson marked the 100th Anniversary by officially establishing June 14 as Flag Day.

The stripes represent the 13 original colonies and the stars for each state in the union. Red symbolizes hardiness and valor, white symbolizes purity, innocence, and blue represents vigilance, perseverance and justice.

Thanks goes to the Derby Public Library staff for sharing interesting history each week.

Recuperation journey: Inspiring scene

As I was leaving today's Art in the Park event in Veterans Park in Ansonia I noticed the dignified bust of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. in front of City Hall appeared to be looking toward the American flag.

Photo experiment at moonrise

The sky was so clear today I had to take a photo of the moon, and the flag. Not sure if I like it; I was experimenting.

The moon was in a waxing gibbous phase, 67 percent illumination.

Recuperation journey: Patriotic neighborhood

I took this photo Friday on a beautiful spring afternoon.
The neighborhood was quiet, and it felt both patriotic and peaceful.

Sharing patriotic photo to start this week

I noticed this fall scene through the back window this afternoon and snapped a photo.
I thought it was appropriate with Election Day and Veterans Day on the horizon.

Seymour school shows patriotism, welcomes veterans from Post 10

Bungay students learn about flag history, etiquette
School chorus performs patriotic songs at Wednesday's assembly.
SEYMOUR - The members of Emil Senger Post 10, American Legion of Seymour visited Bungay Elementary School Wednesday to present a Veterans Day program.

Students performed the Star Spangled Banner, read aloud facts about Veterans Day, and presented Post members with cards and red carnations.

Post Commander Michael Kearney, at left, spoke about the history of the American flag and the importance of respecting it.
Kearney pointed out Post member George Wityak, seated on stage with the American flag draped around him, to demonstrate something that one should never do: wear the flag.

Kearney also pointed out several other improper uses of a flag, including hanging it upside down or backwards, using it as a tablecloth, letting it touch the floor, or flying it lower than other flags next to it.
Students and veterans joined hands at the end of the program.
The gym was filled with patriotic spirit.
Several students marched alongside Post members as they marched out.

Student Council members placed flags at the entrance to the school driveway.
