'Turnback Tuesday' features history of Flag Day, June 14

Turnback Tuesday reminds us that today is Flag Day.

During the American Revolution, the colonists were fighting under a number of flags. The 2nd Continental Congress was looking to unify under one flag.

On June 14, 1777, a resolution was passed stating that “the flag of the United States be 13 stripes alternating red and white” and that “the union be 13 white stars in a blue field.” President Woodrow Wilson marked the 100th Anniversary by officially establishing June 14 as Flag Day.

The stripes represent the 13 original colonies and the stars for each state in the union. Red symbolizes hardiness and valor, white symbolizes purity, innocence, and blue represents vigilance, perseverance and justice.

Happy 244th Birthday today to Old Glory

Flag Day commemorates the adoption by resolution by the Second Continental Congress of the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777.

Fun fact found on history.com:

"Bernard Cigrand, a small-town Wisconsin teacher, originated the idea for an annual flag day, to be celebrated across the country every June 14, in 1885.

"That year, he led his school in the first formal observance of the holiday. Cigrand, who later changed careers and practiced dentistry in Illinois, continued to promote his concept and advocate respect for the flag throughout his life."
