Learn about early water mills at Seymour Public Library program

Water-powered mills brought civilization to Connecticut as early as 1650. In early days, every small Connecticut village had to depend upon itself for almost every necessity. There was no electricity, steam power had not been invented and water-powered mills were the answer.

DERBY - Griffin Hospital School of Allied Health Careers, at 300 Seymour Ave., Suite 206, is accepting applications for its summer semesters of Certified Nursing Assistant, Phlebotomy, Certified Clinical Medical Assistant, and Patient Care Technician programs.

The Phlebotomy, MA, and PCT semesters will begin May 22 and the summer CNA program will start July 17.

The accelerated CNA course offers students an affordable and condensed classroom schedule with classes Monday-Thursday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

The CNA program content includes infection control, legal and ethical responsibilities, communications, body mechanics, moving and positioning residents, personal care skills, nutrition, measuring vital signs, and restorative care. Students will practice skills prior to their clinical experience.

The program’s clinical experience will be at Griffin Hospital and a long-term care facility. The clinical hours are 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m. for a total of 40 hours. After successfully completing the course and clinical experience, students will be qualified to take the certification exam for a Nursing Assistant in Connecticut.

The CNA course tuition fee includes the course book and workbook, CPR training, a 40-hour clinical rotation, and liability insurance.

The PCT program provides students with didactic and skills review on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m., and students have the option to take phlebotomy training on Mondays and Wednesdays from either 9 a.m.-1 p.m. or from 5-9 p.m. The PCT program offers ample hands-on training and opportunities for practical experience in the school's fully equipped mock hospital room and during clinical experience at the hospital or long-term care facility.

The Phlebotomy program offers 32–40 hours of clinical experience. The course tuition includes textbook, liability insurance, CPR certification, clinical rotations, and national certification exams. College credits are offered for eligible certification earners.

The MA program runs for 28 weeks with classes five days a week from 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m., including 160 clinical hours at Griffin Faculty Physicians’ primary care offices and specialty offices such as gastroenterology, OB-GYN, surgical and cardiology.

Medical assistants perform both clinical and administrative duties and assist a variety of providers.

The MA course tuition includes textbook, liability insurance, CPR certification, online modules and certification practice tests, clinical externships, and national certification exam. College credits are offered for eligible certification earners.

Anyone 18 or older with a high school diploma or GED and is proficient in the English language may apply for admission. The COVID-19 vaccination series is required prior to enrollment as well as the booster.

The School of Allied Health Careers has partnered with Meritize to offer student loans in which applicants can enhance credit evaluation and loan options by sharing their academic profiles. Pre-approval is available at https://apply.meritize.com.

Wishing my husband a Happy Birthday in Heaven

Yesterday my computer popped up a reminder that I didn’t need, telling me that today is my late husband’s birthday,

I celebrated his birthday with him for 35 years ~ and this April 26 is the second year I'm wishing him Happy Birthday in Heaven. The years really do fly by.

Ralph posted this not-too-flattering majority card photo taken on his 18th birthday more than once to mark his special day.

I much prefer this one:

Fishing derby slated at Abe Stone Park in Ansonia

Ansonia Parks & Recreation will hold a FREE Fishing Derby from 9 a.m.-noon May 13 at Colony Pond.
The Derby is open to residents 15 and under. Colony Pond has been designated as a “Community Fishing Water.”
What this means is that Colony is stocked with three species of trout (Brown, Brook and Rainbow) twice in the spring.
A new addition this year is that the DEEP also stocked channel catfish. Colony Pond also has healthy populations of largemouth bass and sunfish.
All state regulations apply to any fish taken at Colony Pond such as minimum lengths and creel possession limits.
Trophies and prizes will be provided by Frank Pelaccia.
Some fishing equipment will be available for anyone who does not have a rod and reel to use during the tournament. Participants must supply their own bait.
The late Bill Stokes was an Ansonia resident who worked for years to get the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection to stock trout into Colony Pond.
He was dedicated to improving the opportunities for young and old to enjoy fishing at Colony. In 2015, Colony Pond was designated as a “Community Fishing Water."
Bill passed away in May of 2015 but has left a lasting impression on fishing at Colony Pond, Abe Stone Park, and the entire Ansonia community.
