Ansonia, Derby teams raise $4K for Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin
DERBY - The Ansonia and Derby high school softball and baseball teams recently presented Dr. Denise Barajas, medical director of The Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital, with a donation of $4,000.
The funds were raised at a special pink baseball game on May 16 and at Derby High School’s 14th Annual Pink Softball Game May 17.
Initiated by Derby High Athletic Director and Assistant Derby High Softball Coach Jenn Moffat for former Griffin Hospital employee, Derby High Softball Coach and City of Derby Mayor Joe DiMartino, the fundraisers are held in honor of his wife, Lori, a breast cancer survivor.
Overall, the annual event has raised more than $43,000 to help breast cancer patients in the greater Valley community.
Located at 300 Seymour Ave. The Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital offer patients a comprehensive range of personalized breast care and wellness services.

DERBY - More than 300 participants Sept. 25 raised an event record $65,000 at the 13th Annual 5K Walk/Run to Benefit the Center for Cancer Care
“The success of the Center for Cancer Care 5K Walk-Run demonstrates just how close our community is, and how committed we all are to caring for each other,” said Griffin Health President and CEO Patrick Charmel.
“The funds raised will provide support to our patients, from helping with expenses like groceries, utility and transportation bills, to providing salon services to give patients comfort and confidence.”
The event featured awards for the top individual fundraiser and top team fundraiser selected from the 315 participants and 24 teams.
The winner of the William C. Powanda Memorial Award for the top fundraiser was Stephanie Ventimiglia of Derby, who raised more than $3,800.
Team Aversa raised $13,200 and won the Team Synergy Award as the top fundraising team.
Barbara Scarpa of Derby was the winner of the new Make It Happen Spirit Award, which recognizes an individual who exhibits tireless effort and support.
The Walk/Run was sponsored by LaBonne’s Markets, Jefferson Radiology, D’Addario Auto Group, All About You!, Ion Bank Foundation, R.D. Scinto, Smilow Cancer Center, A&S Nathan Heating and Cooling, Forest Construction, Yale Therapeutic Radiology, and WEBE 108 FM.
In-kind sponsors included BJ’s, Coca-Cola, Market 32, Rockland Bakery, ShopRite, Stani Dairy, Stop & Shop, and Unidine.
Donations are still being accepted at griffinhealth.org/5k or via mail to The Griffin Development Fund, 130 Division St., Derby, 06418.

Shelton libraries to sponsor virtual Trivia Night Wednesday
SHELTON - The Plumb Memorial and Huntington Branch libraries will sponsor a virtual Trivia Night for adults and teens to play at home. Players will need a computer or device to access Zoom and a second device like a smartphone or tablet to answer questions on Kahoot.
The Zoom/Kahoot event will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday and registration is required. You can register in person at either library or by visiting our website at www.sheltonlibrarysystem.org.
Individuals or families and friends are encouraged to play as teams.
You will need a computer or device with Internet access to play.
The trivia game will include a variety of topics of general information, and the three high scoring teams will receive prizes.
