Derby Historical Society to host open hearth tasting Saturday at Humphreys House


Saturday may be rainy and chilly outside, but it will be warm and toasty inside at the Humphreys House.

Preregistration is not necessary but please drop a comment below or email us (info@derbyhistorical.org) and let us know you're interested in attending so we can prepare enough delicious treats!

Derby Historical Society to demonstrate open hearth cooking at Humphreys House


ANSONIA - Join Derby Historical Society docent Maria Schreiner March 24 as she guides you through preparing a traditional 18th-century meal over an open hearth at the David Humphreys House.
Participants will make a full meal including dessert and will participate in every step from starting the fire to enjoying their meal (and bringing leftovers home!)
This event is limited to 8 people. Tickets are $40 per person. Registration opens Friday, March 1 for this one of a kind experience.

The Humphreys House is at 37 Elm St.
Reserve a space by calling the Derby Historical Society at 203-735-1908. If there is enough interest, there will be a second class.

Derby Historical Society schedules open hearth cooking class at Humphreys House

ANSONIA - The Derby Historical Society is ready to teach you the skills and technology of long ago. A cooking program was so popular in the past that the talented Maria Schreiner is returning at 11 a.m. March 27 for another three-hour session!

Each person will assist in cooking an entree and a dessert in our fireplace at the David Humphreys House, 37 Elm St., and participants get to enjoy the meal after building up an appetite.

The cost is $25 per person.

Space is very limited for this specialty skill workshop; pre-registration required by calling 203-735-1908 or emailing info@derbyhistorical.org


*Masks are required for indoor events, according to current state guidelines, and capacity will be regulated*

ANSONIA -The Derby Historical Society announces a series geared towards teaching the skills and technology of long ago. 

In this part of our Colonial Skills Series, the talented Maria Schreiner will teach you more history behind hearth cooking and the Colonial era. 

Each person will assist in cooking an entree and a dessert in our fireplace, AND you get to enjoy the meal after working that appetite!

* Masks are required for indoor events according to current State of CT guidelines. 

Group/tour sizes monitored. Masks are not required for outdoor events unless 6-foot distancing cannot be maintained. The gift shop open to one family/group at a time during Open House events.

Learn open hearth cooking at Derby Historical Society workshop

ANSONIA - The Derby Historical Society has scheduled a series geared towards teaching you the skills and technology of long ago. 
The first workshop will be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Feb. 8 at the David Humphreys House, 37 Elm St.

In this first part of our Colonial Skills Series,  Maria Schreiner will teach you the basics of fire-starting and the history behind hearth cooking. 
Each person will assist in cooking an entree and a dessert in our fireplace, and you get to enjoy the meal after building up an appetite!

Derby Historical Society to host autumn open hearth cooking event

ANSONIA - The Derby Historical Society will host its Autumn Open Hearth event from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9. 

There will be a raffle of an American Girl Wellie Wisher, courtesy of Heather’s Korner, and a set of four tickets to the Nov. 22 Huskies vs. Providence Hockey Game at the XL Center in Hartford.

There will be tours of the circa 1698 museum house and Dutch oven baking demonstrations. There is a great gift shop filled with little treasures, including handmade clothes for all  American Girl Doll needs.

Suggested donation is $5 per adult; children under the age of 5 are admitted free.

Docents will prepare 18th Century seasonal favorites over an open hearth.  
Enjoy a sample of these items and some modern day tastings with a cup of mulled cider.  
Stay for a tour of the house; the gift shop will also be open.

Suggested donation is $5.
Parking is available behind the house or on nearby Thomas Street.

Open hearth cooking demo planned at Humphreys House in Ansonia

ANSONIA - Derby Historical Society will hold its Open Hearth Cooking Demonstration from 1-4 p.m. Nov. 18 at the David Humphreys House, 37 Elm St.   
Docents will be cooking 18th-Century seasonal favorites over an open hearth. 

Enjoy a small sample of these delicious items, along with some some modern day tastings, and a cup of mulled cider.
While visiting, stay for a tour of the historic Humphreys House, the birthplace of David Humphreys, aide-de-camp of Gen. George Washington. 
The gift shop also will be open during this event. 

Parking is available in rear of the house or on nearby Thomas Street.

Derby Historical Society to host Open Hearth Cooking event today

ANSONIA - Docents at the Derby Historical Society will prepare 18th-century seasonal foods from 1-4 p.m. today over an open hearth at the Gen. David Humphreys House, 37 Elm St.

There is a suggested donation of $5 per person.





The photo at right is of a tin oven next to the fireplace in Lady Humphreys' parlor. 
A turkey was roasted in the oven during a November event in 2010.

Derby Historical Society to demonstrate open hearth cooking

ANSONIA - Visit the Derby Historical Society at the David Humphreys House from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 14) as docents demonstrate Open Hearth Cooking.

The house is at 37 Elm St.


A variety of 18th-Century seasonal favorites will be prepared over a roaring fire and visitors will be offered small samples.

Tours of the Humphreys House will be available.

The gift shop also will be open during this event for a head start on your holiday shopping.

Pick up a book on local history or an old-fashioned toy for your favorite youngster, no batteries required. Soy candles, natural soaps, and historical calendars all made locally in Ansonia and Derby will be for sale. 


Refreshments will be served. 
Admission is $5 donation.


Step back in time and enjoy this interesting and educational event! You won't be disappointed.
