SEYMOUR - Get ready for a festive, fun-filled holiday concert with Joy Blooms at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 4 at Seymour Public Library.

Featuring a lively mix of original songs and holiday classics, this interactive family show will have everyone singing along and celebrating the season.

Griffin Health to present annual Valley Soul concert at church in Seymour

SEYMOUR - Griffin Health invites the community to a free concert of traditional and contemporary gospel and holiday music on Dec. 9 at Church of the Good Shepherd, 135 Mountain Road.

The Griffin Health Annual Holiday Concert is a cherished community tradition that brings voices together from all walks of life, backgrounds, personal circumstances, and life experiences in a collaboration that builds understanding, trust, mutual respect, and beautiful music to bring joy to the holiday season.

Under the direction of recording artist and music industry veteran Angela Clemmons, the Valley Soul Gospel Choir of volunteer singers will be the main attraction for an energizing and uplifting concert of traditional and contemporary gospel and ‘gospelized’ holiday songs. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the concert starts at 6:30 p.m. Refreshments will follow.

The event is sponsored by the President’s Fund at Griffin Hospital as a thank you to Griffin’s sponsors and the community, and as a celebration of Griffin’s family of employees, medical staff, volunteers, corporators, and trustees for their dedication, compassion and expertise.

The event is free and open to all. No reservations needed. Seating is general admission on a first come, first served basis.

Calling all volunteer singers: Griffin Health's Valley Soul holiday concert is back

DERBY - Griffin Health is seeking singers of all skill levels to help bring back some live holiday “soul” to the Naugatuck Valley this winter.

After a series of virtual concerts due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Griffin is once again assembling a gospel choir of volunteer singers from throughout the Valley under the direction of Angela Clemmons, a chart-topping vocalist who has captivated audiences for more than 35 years.

She is director of the acclaimed “Shoreline Soul” performances in Madison.

In addition to providing an inspiring and uplifting performance, the Valley Soul choir aims to bring together individuals from churches and organizations throughout the area to help build and strengthen partnerships that will improve the health of the region.

The volunteer singers will take part in six, two-hour workshops, culminating in a hand-clapping, foot-stomping, this-couldn’t-possibly-be-Naugatuck-Valley concert of traditional and contemporary gospel and holiday music on Dec. 12.

“Our weekly sessions are upbeat, fun, and very user-friendly,” Clemmons said, “No one needs to know how to read music. All songs are taught by ear and everyone is given a practice CD. It’s amazing how much the choir learns and how confident they become in six short weeks, particularly when many have never sung gospel before.”

The training sessions will be Sept. 13 and 20, Oct. 11 and 25, Nov. 15 and Dec. 6 from 6:45-8:45 p.m. The location for the practices is to be determined. 

Although the workshop is primarily for adults, youth who are able to follow a lyric sheet are welcome to participate.

Soul in the Valley Director Angela Clemmons has been a professional singer for over 35 years.

 As a background singer, she worked with Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Celine Dion, Steely Dan, Cyndi Lauper, Elton John, among many others. 

Her voice could be heard on TV and radio jingles for Burger King, Canada Dry Ginger Ale, Coke, KFC, Slim Fast, and many more. 

She did two albums for CBS Records, which included the #4 disco hit “Give Me Just a Little More Time.”

Angela spent 2013 touring with the Rascals (“It’s a Beautiful Morning,” “Groovin’”) as part of the “Rascals: Once Upon a Dream” show, performing on Broadway and theaters all over the US and Canada. 

TV appearances include The View, The Tony Awards, Saturday Night Live, and others. Angela, mother of two, resides in Westbrook with her husband.

SHELTON - Griffin Hospital invites the community to a free holiday concert Dec. 6 at Shelton High School, 120 Meadow St.

The Griffin Hospital Annual Holiday Concert will feature the 102nd Army Band. Refreshments will be served at 6:30 p.m. and the auditorium will open at 7 p.m.

The 102nd Army Band is the official musical emissary for the Connecticut Army National Guard. Beginning in 1863 as the First Regiment, Connecticut National Guard Band, its musical tradition has continued through many designations and locations.

The 102nd Band served in World Wars I and II, and the Korean Conflict. 

'Goodwill Ambassadors'

As “Goodwill Ambassadors,” the 102nd performs in a variety of concerts, ceremonies, and parades around the world. The band has had the honor of playing for U.S. troops returning home from Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Noble Eagle and a NATO Change of Command ceremony in Heidelberg, Germany.

The band plays a variety of music such as classical, jazz, show tunes, rock and pop.

Ansonia High School plans winter concert Dec. 17

ANSONIA - You are cordially invited to attend the annual winter concert, "All On A Cold Winter's Night," performed by the AHS Music Department, at 7 p.m. Dec. 17 at Ansonia High School. 

Admission is $5 per person, or free with a donation of one new winter accessory item to the Warming Tree sponsored by the AHS Student Government.

Take some time away from the hustle and bustle of the holiday season and treat yourself to an evening of music!

The school is at 20 Pulaski Highway.

Community choir to perform concerts in Naugatuck, Waterbury

My husband, Ralph, and I enjoyed the choir's 'Sounds of Liberty' concert in May that featured patriotic music.

And we look forward to attending the program celebrating Christmas. 

According to the choir's website "Silent Night," "Hark! the Herald Angels Sing," and my favorite carol, "O Come All Ye Faithful," are some of the songs to be performed.

Admission is free, with good will offerings accepted.

SEYMOUR - Griffin Hospital will hold its annual Holiday Concert featuring the United States Coast Guard Academy Cadet Glee Club Dec. 3 at Seymour Middle School, 211 Mountain Road.

The event is sponsored by the President's Fund at Griffin Hospital.
Tickets are free, but general admission seating is by reservation only.

The United States Coast Guard Academy Cadet Glee Club is a select group of 40 men and women chosen from the Corps of Cadets by audition. The group specializes in patriotic music and songs of the sea.

Glee Club director and musical arranger is Robert C. Newton, Director of Cadet Vocal Music at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
