History, Tech Talks, movies, more offered in April at Derby Neck Library

DERBY - The Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave., has scheduled a variety of programs for April.

Dinner and a Movie
The Library presents Dinner and a Movie, for ages 18 and older at 5:30 p.m. April 7. 
This month’s feature film is “Brooklyn.”
Free refreshments will be served, including a pizza dinner at intermission. No registration is required.

Teen Movie Night
The Library presents Teen Movie Night at 5:30 p.m. April 14. This monthly event is open to teens and tweens. Attendees get to vote for a favorite movie, from a group of four feature films. 
Free refreshments will be served, including a pizza dinner.

Women's Forum
The Library hosts Women’s Forum, a discussion group that focuses on literature, history, and the arts, at 12:30 p.m. April 18.
This month we discuss two short stories by a contemporary author—Robert Lorenzi. Both stories, “Damage” and “Kristi, the Barmaid” are available free at the library. Bring a light lunch if you wish; we serve free coffee and tea.

Tech Talks
At 6 p.m. April 18 and again at 10:30 a.m. April 20, the Library presents Tech Talks. 
This is a monthly program that offers information on what is new in technology and describes how to best use it for your needs. Attendees are also free to bring their questions.

Writers' Round
At 6:30 p.m. April 21 the Library hosts Writers’ Round, a workshop for authors of all genres—fiction, poetry, prose, scripts, history, etc. Bring your original works to share with others.

Scarf tying
The Library presents Joann Czeczot with “Tying Fashion Scarves” at 2 p.m. April 24.
Learn all the special techniques involved in getting that special look for spring and summer. 
A variety of fashion hints will be offered to make the most of a simple, yet functional accessory. 
There is no program fee, but registration is requested. Attendees will be eligible for a free raffle. Bring a friend and enjoy an interesting afternoon.

Evening Book Club
At 6:30 p.m. April 25 the Library hosts the Evening Book Club which meets around the fireplace in the Reading Room. 
This month’s book is Jane Austen’s “Lady Susan.” Copies of the book are available at the library. Come enjoy an informational and stimulating evening.

'Newspapers in the Civil War'
At 6:30 p.m. April 26 the Library presents Prof. Hamish Lutris of Housatonic Community College speaking on “Newspapers in the Civil War.” 
This power point presentation will focus on the diverse and interesting manners in which reporters covered the war, including the use of telegraphy and their rough lives camping with soldiers. 
An informative and amusing talk on this fascinating era in American history.

DERBY - Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave., will offer a variety of fun and educational programs in December.

Dinner and a Movie
The Library presents “Dinner and a Movie,” a program for ages 18 and older, at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 3. Come enjoy a movie on our blu-ray system and large screen.  
Free movie refreshments will be served, as well as a free dinner at intermission.  
This month’s selection is “Mr. Holmes,” starring Ian McKellan as the detective in his older years.  

Civil War talk

At 6:30 p.m. Dec. 7, the Library hosts Prof. Hamish Lutris of HCC discussing “Animal Mascots in the Civil War.”  
Lutris rejoins us to share his wisdom and insights into this unique aspect of American history. Mascots offered some comfort and humor for the troops in the 1860s, and several became figures of legend and lore. This is a free program.  

Holiday Open House

The Library will host a “Holiday Open-House Fun Day” will be held from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Dec. 9.
This is an event for all ages, including puzzles, games, crafts, music, and holiday related snacks. Bring the entire family at any part of the day.  

Tech Talks

At 6 p.m. Dec. 14 and again on Dec. 16 at 10:30 a.m., the Library presents “Tech Talks,” a monthly program that explores and explains what is new in technology and how to best fit it into your own needs.  
Questions are welcomed at each session. 

Talk about stone structures

The Library hosts Andrew Pighills, a native of Yorkshire, England discussing the fascinating “Stone Structures and Walls,” both in England and in New England at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 15.
An accomplished, artisan, gardener, and horticulturalist, Pighills has appeared in print in the New York Times, Yankee magazine, and other such publications.
Come learn all about this part of our local heritage.

Music and Movement

At 6:30 p.m. Dec. 16 the Library offers “Bedtime Music and Movement,” a chance to sing and dance with Miss Kathi under our indoor stars.  
Wear your pajamas and bring a favorite stuffed animal if you wish.  

Writers' Round

The Library hosts “Writers’ Round,” a workshop  for writers of all genres - scripts, non-fiction, prose, poetry, history, memoir, and more at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 17.  
Come share your original works with others and practice from a thought-provoking writing prompt. 

Evening Book Club

At 6:30 p.m. Dec. 28 the Library presents the Evening Book Club. This month’s selection is “A Christmas Memory” by Truman Capote.  
Copies of the book are available at the library. Come join us for an informative and stimulating discussion.

Derby Neck Library to present holiday recipes, Tech Talks, writers' workshop, more

Derby Neck Library

DERBY - The Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave. will present “Holiday Quiche and Appetizers with Dana Joy" from 2-4 p.m. Nov. 15.

Recipes of Joy’s famous quiche will be available, with an emphasis on fall and holiday special flavors.  
She will have her recipe book for sale and signing. Free quiche samples will be shared by all attendees.  
Registration is required.

Women's Forum  

From 12:30-1:30 p.m. Nov. 16, the Library hosts “Women’s Forum,” a literary discussion group that focuses on short stories.  
This month we have two short stories by a contemporary author; copies are available at the library. Feel free to bring a light lunch; we serve free coffee and tea.

At 6 p.m. Nov. 16 and again at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 18 the Library presents “Tech Talks” a monthly program that keeps you up to date with what is the newest in technology and how to best fit it into your own needs.

This group meets on the last Monday of each month in the library’s Reading Room, by the fireplace. We share our ideas on shorter books of fiction, memoir, and inspirational topics.  
This month we discuss “The Bookshop” by Penelope Fitzgerald.

DERBY - The Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave., lists the following activities for October:

Smash Club
At 2 p.m. Oct. 1 the Library hosts Smash Club for teens and tweens. Come play Super Smash Brothers on our WiiU. No competition, just an afternoon of fun.

Dinner and a Movie
The Library presents Dinner and a Movie for ages 18 and older at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 1. This month’s feature, shown on blu-ray, is the newly released Cinderella.
We serve free movie refreshments and a free dinner at the intermission.

Live music
The Library presents an afternoon performance of live music at 2 p.m. Oct. 10. Come enjoy singer-songwriter Sheri Miller as she presents Fall in Love music. She includes traditional pieces as well as her own creations. 

This event is open to all ages. Free light refreshments will be served.

Music and Movement
The Library presents Bedtime Music and Movement with Miss Kathi at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 14. Come sing and dance under our indoor stars. Wear your jammies and bring a favorite stuffed animal if you like.

This month’s selections are both by famed Portuguese author Clarice Lispector—“The Triumph” and “Jimmy and I.” Copies of both stories are available at the library. 
Feel free to bring a light lunch: we serve free coffee and tea.

At 6 p.m. Oct. 19 and again at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 21 the Library presents Tech Talks, a monthly program to help introduce our patrons to what is new in technology and how to best fit it into their needs. We also answer your questions and concerns.

Movie Night
The Library hosts Teen Movie Night at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 22. All teens and tweens are invited to enjoy free refreshments while viewing a scary movie appropriate for Halloween. Bring your friends!

Evening Book Club
The Library hosts the Evening Book Club at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 26. This month’s selection is “An Academic Question” by Barbara Pym. Copies are available at the library. Come enjoy a stimulating and informative discussion of this novella.

Halloween Party
At 4 p.m. Oct. 28 the Library hosts a Not-Too-Scary Halloween Party for little children.
Miss Kathi will lead the singing and dancing and serve snacks. Wear your favorite costume and bring your favorite adult too.

Music, art, movies on tap at Derby Neck Library in August

DERBY - Derby Neck Library will present a free concert by Survivor Swing Band featuring swing music of the '20s and '30s and the Big Band sound that followed at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 1. 

Hear old tunes given a new flavor with up-beat improvisations. This is a four-piece band made up primarily of senior musicians who give a very fun and professional approach to their favorite music.

Collage making
The Library will present a Great Masters Collage session for kids ages 3 and older at 11 a.m. Aug. 3. 
Bring your children to create a mixed media masterpiece using paint, paper, ribbons, and markers, while learning how art works from instructor Kim Larkin. Registration is required.

Painting for teens

The Library will host a Teen Painting session at 2 p.m. Aug. 6. All teens and tweens are invited. 
Create your own masterpiece with our supplies and free instruction from a visiting member of the traveling Art Truck. Registration is required.

Cartooning for kids
The Library presents Cartooning for Kids at 1 p.m. Aug. 10. This is a free program for children ages 5 and older. Create your own characters and guide them through an adventure, or bring in your own ideas on making great cartoons. Registration is required.

Teen Movie Night
The Library hosts Teen I-Spy Movie Night, featuring “Man of Steel” at 4 p.m. Aug. 13. Watch the film and follow clues. The most number of correct answers wins you a prize. This event is open to both teens and tweens. 
There will be free refreshments, including a pizza dinner at intermission. Seating is limited; call to register.

Women's Forum
The Library hosts Women’s Forum at 12:30 p.m. Aug. 17. This discussion group focuses on the literary arts, especially short stories. 
This month we read “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury and “Getting Closer” by Steven Millhauser. 
Copies are available at the library. You may wish to bring a light lunch; free coffee and tea served.

The Library presents Tech Talks at 6 p.m. Aug. 17. This is a free program that focuses on various aspects of technology and how recent advancements best work for you.

Flood of 1955
At 6:30 p.m. Aug. 18, the Library commemorates the 60th Anniversary of the Flood of 1955. Join us for a talk by a local resident/historian and a power point presentation of original photographs of the flood, donated by neighbors of the library. 
These photos have never been reproduced in the press. On exhibit will be the original local newspapers that covered the flood, also recently donated to us.

DERBY - The following events are planned in July at Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave.

Tech Talks
At 6 p.m. July 13 and again at 10:30 a.m. July 15 the Library will present Tech Talks. This month PC maintenance will be explained, specifically dealing with software. Join us for our monthly information session and bring your questions as well.

Teen puzzle fun
The Library will hold a Teen 3D Puzzle session at 2 p.m. July 14. Attendees will work in pairs or solo to construct their 3D puzzle. Prizes (as well as your completed puzzle) will be awarded to all finishers. Finish first and you will win a grand prize. Registration is recommended to assure a place.

Writers' Round
The Writers’ Round group will meet at the Library at 6:30 p.m. July 16. Join us in sharing and discussing your original works in any written format—scripts, poems, essays, fiction, etc. Come be inspired and encouraged in your endeavors as an author.

Women's Forum
At 12:30 p.m. July 20 the Library hosts Women’s Forum, a monthly discussion group that focuses on short stories. 

This month’s selections are “Getting Closer” by Steven Millhauser and “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury.

Copies are available at the library. Bring a light lunch; we serve free coffee and tea.


Mommy and Me Balloons
The Library hosts Mommy and Me Balloons (for dads too) at 3 p.m. July 22. Join us as balloon artist Paul Mordoff teaches you and your child how to twist all types of shapes from balloons. All supplies are provided free.

If you wish to purchase a special kit for home use call the library, 203-734-1492 and place your order prior to July 8. The cost of a take-home kit is $15.


Meet the Author
The Library presents Matthew Duman, author of “An Education in Grotesque: The Gargoyles of Yale University” at 6:30 p.m. July 22.

Photographer and writer Duman describes the look and meaning of the unusual grotesque figures that grace the architecture of Yale’s most noted buildings.
Learn about the art and significance of these odd pieces. This is another of our free programs in the series Meet the Author.


Trivia session
The Library will host a Super Hero Trivia session at 2 p.m. July 23. Come show how much you and your friends really know about superheroes, as you play singularly or in pairs to answer trivia questions. 

A grand prize will be awarded to the most successful player(s). Free refreshments will be served. Registration is recommended.


Evening Book Club
The Library will hold the Evening Book Club at 6:30 p.m. July 27. This group meets monthly to discuss the best of short fiction, inspirational writings, or memoirs. 

This month’s novel is “A Lost Lady” written by Willa Cather. Copies of the book are available at the library. Come join in a stimulating and meaningful talk .

Ceramics Painting
At 11 a.m. July 29 the Library will present Ceramics Painting, a program for younger children ages 3 and older. Each child will choose one figurine to paint—cat, dog, turtle, pig, or shark.
Guest artist Miss Jessica will help you as you use acrylic paint on your creation. The figurines will be yours to keep. Registration is required.

Teen Video Tourney
The Library has scheduled a Teen Video Game Tournament at 2 p.m. July 29. Come bring your friends to compete on our Wii U. 

Games selections change as our sessions do all summer. Check the flyers in the library for game title announcements.
Prizes will be awarded and free refreshments served.

Registration is strongly suggested.

Dinner and a Movie
The library hosts “Dinner and a Movie” for ages 18 and older at 5:30 p.m. May 7. This month’s feature film is “It Happened One Night” shown on blu-ray. 
This is a 1937 Frank Capra classic featuring Clark Gable and Colette Colbert. 
Refreshments will be served, including a free dinner at intermission. Reservations required.

Music and movement
The Library presents Miss Kathi dancing and singing under our indoor stars at 6:30 p.m. May 13. 
“Bedtime Music and Movement” happens once each month. Your child is invited to come in comfortable pajamas and bring a favorite stuffed animal or doll.

Cooking demo
The Library hosts Dana Joy and her “Springtime Special Quiche.” at 2 p.m. May 17. Dana will show you her cooking techniques and offer advice on making the perfect quiche. She will also have her exclusive recipes for sale in book form. Come to the library to enjoy a free program and tasting session.

Women's forum
At 12:30 p.m. May 18 the Library hosts “Women’s Forum” a discussion group devoted to short stories, poetry, history, and related arts. 
Our two stories for this month are “A Clean, Well-Lighted Place” by Ernest Hemingway and “The Lumber-Room” by H.H. Munro. Free copies of these stories are available at the library. You may wish to bring a light lunch. We serve free coffee and tea.

Book club
At 6:30 p.m. May 18 “The Evening Book Club” meets at the Library. This month’s title is “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” by Truman Capote. Copies are available at the library. Our club is devoted to reading novels by the best authors , as well as some memoirs and inspirational writings.

The Library hosts the monthly “Evening Book Club” at 6:30 p.m. April 27. This month’s selection is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Copies are available at the library. 
This is an enthused and informative group, so do not miss it.
