See a movie, learn floral design, more at Derby Neck Library


DERBY - The Derby Neck Library hosts Dinner and a Movie for ages 18 and older at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 2. 
This month’s feature film is “2001: A Space Odyssey” shown on a large screen in high definition.  
Free movie refreshments will be served, including a pizza dinner at intermission. 

Floral design
At 2:30 p.m. Aug. 4 the Library presents Larry Huzi, an award-winning floral designer.  
Huzi will demonstrate three floral arrangements of high originality and uniqueness. Come enjoy a masterful artist at work and learn how to use the beauty of fresh flowers in your home. 

Video game tournament
The Library hosts a Teen Video Game Tournament at 3 p.m. Aug. 7.
Come bring your friends, test your gaming skills, and win prizes. Free refreshments will be served. Teens and tweens are invited.

3-D Puzzle challenge
On Aug. 13 at 3 p.m. the Library will host a teen 3-D puzzle challenge.  
Come with friends and construct a unique 3-D plastic puzzle. Free refreshments will be served. Teens and tweens are invited.  

Herbal pillow workshop 
The Library hosts the Grounded Goodwife, a mother and daughter team of herbalists, at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 14.  
They will conduct a Herbal Sleep Pillow Workshop, and attendees will go home with their own self-created pillow for beneficial sleep.  
Registration is required; seating is limited. 

Women's Forum
On Aug. 20 at 12:30 p.m., the Library hosts Women’s Forum, a literary discussion group focusing on short stories.  
This month we read two stories on mystery themes; copies are available at the library.  
Bring a light lunch if you wish; we serve free coffee and tea.  

Evening Book Club
The Library hosts the Evening Book Club, which focuses on award-winning novellas and some memoirs, at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 27.  
This month’s selection is “Dawn” by Elie Wiesel. Copies are available at the library.  
Join us for an informative and stimulating evening.

Learn history, Talk Tech, discuss books at Derby Neck Library


DERBY - The Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave., will present Tech Talks at 6 p.m. Feb. 13 and again at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 15. 
Tech Talks is a monthly program devoted to what is new in technology and how best to use it in your daily life.  February’s topic is maintaining your PC software. 
Also, bring any questions to the meeting.  

Video game tournament
The Library hosts its Smash Club’s Video Game Tournament at 3 p.m. Feb. 15. Bring a friend and enjoy a challenge together. All teens and tweens are welcome.  
Free refreshments will be served and prizes awarded for top scorers. 

Women's Forum
At 12:30 p.m. Feb. 20 the Library hosts Women’s Forum, a lunch group that discusses short stories, the arts, and Valley history. This month we feature a powerpoint presentation by researcher Pat Sweeney: "The Valley in the Great Depression Years." It includes details from the letters of Frances Osborne Kellogg.  Bring a light lunch if you wish. We serve free coffee and tea.  

Local history program
The Library hosts “The Valley in the Great Depression Years,” a powerpoint presentation by researcher Pat Sweeney, at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 21. 
Learn about the WPA projects in our towns, the celebration of the Connecticut Tercentennial, the Great Hurricane of 1938, fashions, entertainment, and much more.  
Included are highlights from the letters of Frances Osborne Kellogg. 

Evening Book Club
The Library hosts the Evening Book Club at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 27. This month’s selection is the classic “The Invisible Man” by H.G. Wells. We focus on short novels by award-winning authors.  
All books selected are available at our library. At each meeting, the conversation is both informative and entertaining.

Learn about American Indian music, talk tech at Derby Neck Library


DERBY - The Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave., has scheduled a variety of programs in December.

American Indian music
At 3 p.m. Dec. 10 the Library presents “An Introduction to American Indian Music” with Craig Harris.
Percussionist and educator, Harris is the author of the newly published book, Heartbeat, Warble, and the Electric Powwow: American Indian Music. 

He offers a fascinating look at his topic using archival audio recordings, as well as a video presentation. 
This is a free event and no registration is required.

Tech Talks
On Dec. 19 at 6 p.m. and again at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 21, the Library hosts Tech Talks, an information program that meets monthly to offer tips and ideas on what is new in technology and how to best use it in your daily life.

Evening Book Club 
The Library hosts the Evening Book Club at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 19.

This month’s selection is “The Lilies of the Field” by William E. Barrett. This book was the basis for the 1963 film starring Sidney Poitier. 
Copies of the book are available at our library. Join us at our cozy fireplace for an informative and stimulating discussion.

Video game tournament

At 4 p.m. Dec. 21 the Library hosts the Smash! Club Video Game Tournament open to teens and tweens. 

Bring your friends for an afternoon of fun.

Derby Neck Library slates teen events, women's forum, trivia session, more

Derby Neck Library

DERBY - The following events are planned in July at Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave.

Tech Talks
At 6 p.m. July 13 and again at 10:30 a.m. July 15 the Library will present Tech Talks. This month PC maintenance will be explained, specifically dealing with software. Join us for our monthly information session and bring your questions as well.

Teen puzzle fun
The Library will hold a Teen 3D Puzzle session at 2 p.m. July 14. Attendees will work in pairs or solo to construct their 3D puzzle. Prizes (as well as your completed puzzle) will be awarded to all finishers. Finish first and you will win a grand prize. Registration is recommended to assure a place.

Writers' Round
The Writers’ Round group will meet at the Library at 6:30 p.m. July 16. Join us in sharing and discussing your original works in any written format—scripts, poems, essays, fiction, etc. Come be inspired and encouraged in your endeavors as an author.

Women's Forum
At 12:30 p.m. July 20 the Library hosts Women’s Forum, a monthly discussion group that focuses on short stories. 
This month’s selections are “Getting Closer” by Steven Millhauser and “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury.

Copies are available at the library. Bring a light lunch; we serve free coffee and tea.


Mommy and Me Balloons
The Library hosts Mommy and Me Balloons (for dads too) at 3 p.m. July 22. Join us as balloon artist Paul Mordoff teaches you and your child how to twist all types of shapes from balloons. All supplies are provided free.

If you wish to purchase a special kit for home use call the library, 203-734-1492 and place your order prior to July 8. The cost of a take-home kit is $15.


Meet the Author
The Library presents Matthew Duman, author of “An Education in Grotesque: The Gargoyles of Yale University” at 6:30 p.m. July 22.

Photographer and writer Duman describes the look and meaning of the unusual grotesque figures that grace the architecture of Yale’s most noted buildings.
Learn about the art and significance of these odd pieces. This is another of our free programs in the series Meet the Author.


Trivia session
The Library will host a Super Hero Trivia session at 2 p.m. July 23. Come show how much you and your friends really know about superheroes, as you play singularly or in pairs to answer trivia questions. 
A grand prize will be awarded to the most successful player(s). Free refreshments will be served. Registration is recommended.


Evening Book Club
The Library will hold the Evening Book Club at 6:30 p.m. July 27. This group meets monthly to discuss the best of short fiction, inspirational writings, or memoirs. 
This month’s novel is “A Lost Lady” written by Willa Cather. Copies of the book are available at the library. Come join in a stimulating and meaningful talk .

Ceramics Painting
At 11 a.m. July 29 the Library will present Ceramics Painting, a program for younger children ages 3 and older. Each child will choose one figurine to paint—cat, dog, turtle, pig, or shark.
Guest artist Miss Jessica will help you as you use acrylic paint on your creation. The figurines will be yours to keep. Registration is required.

Teen Video Tourney
The Library has scheduled a Teen Video Game Tournament at 2 p.m. July 29. Come bring your friends to compete on our Wii U. 
Games selections change as our sessions do all summer. Check the flyers in the library for game title announcements.
Prizes will be awarded and free refreshments served.

Registration is strongly suggested.
