Derby Neck Library offers movie, motivational seminar, more in April

DERBY - Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave., hosts Dinner and a Movie for ages 18 and older at 5:30 p.m. April 5. 
 

This month’s film is “Lady Bird.” 
Come enjoy free movie refreshments, including a pizza dinner at intermission.  

Motivational seminar

At 2 p.m. April 7 the Library hosts a free Motivational Seminar conducted by business expert Marjan Sattarpour.  

Learn how she was inspired to change her life, lose weight, and become a champion athlete. She shares her tips for life changes that truly work. 

Author to discuss novel

The Library presents author Beth Lapin discussing her book  “Caravan of Dreams” at 6:30 p.m. April 9.

The story is based on a 1896 death on the railroad tracks in East Hartford, involving gypsies.  

Learn how the author traced down these individuals and reclaimed their story for her novel.  Copies of her book will be available for purchase and signing. 

Women's Forum

The Library will host Women’s Forum, a discussion group that focuses on short stories and Valley history presentations at 12:30 p.m. April 16.

This month we consider two short stories by Willa Cather.  

Copies of the stories are available at the library.

Tech Talks

At 10:30 a.m. April 18 the Library will host Tech Talks, a monthly program which offer advice on what is new in technology and how to best use it in your life. 

Author to speak

At 6:30 p.m. April 24 the Library will present noted lecturer David Leff with a talk on “Deep Travel: How to Journey like H.D. Thoreau.”  

Join us as we learn how the famed naturalist approached travel and how he made his observations along the way.  

Leff has authored numerous books of essays, poetry, natural history, and more - all with a focus on the beauties of the natural sights around us in Connecticut.  

Evening Book Club

The Library hosts the Evening Book Club at its fireplace setting at 6:30 p.m. April 30.

This month we discuss “The Death of Ivan Ilyich” by Leo Tolstoy.  

Come enjoy an informative and interesting conversation. 
We focus on an award-winning novella each month.

DERBY - The Derby Neck Library will host Women’s Forum at 12:30 p.m. March 19. The meeting will include a powerpoint presentation by Pat Sweeney on “Connecticut and Valley Suffragists.” It will include details about Frances Osborne Kellogg, library founder and benefactor, who was involved in local activities to gain the vote for women. 
The public is invited to attend this well-researched lecture.  
Free coffee and tea will be served.

Tech Talks

Tech Talks, a monthly program to describe what is new in technology and how to best use it in your daily life, will be held at 10:30 a.m. March 21.

Identity fraud workshop

The Library will present a workshop led by Mike Savenelli on identity fraud, the latest scams, and more at 6:30 p.m. March 21.
Learn how to protect yourself and avoid becoming a victim of financial predators from a seasoned lecturer who will have handouts available for attendees. 

The Kerry Boys

The Kerry Boys will return to the library at 2 p.m. March 24, with their rousing ballads and entertaining approach to Irish music.  
This is a free event; come early to get your seats.

Evening Book Club

At 6:30 p.m. March 26 the Library will host the Evening Book Club moderated by Pat Sweeney, Ph.D.  
The selection this month is “The Bridge of San Luis Rey” by Thornton Wilder, who once lived in Hamden.

Derby Neck Library to host cooking demo, movie, Tech Talks

DERBY - The Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave., will host Chocolate Truffles at the Library, a cooking demonstration led by Maria Brandriff, at 6 p.m. Dec. 12.  
Learn how to prepare these elegant, enticing treats for yourself or your holiday guests - or even as unique gifts. 
Learn about the various types of chocolate and how to work with them. Samples and recipes will be given out free.  
This program is limited to 20 attendees; call early to reserve your seat.

Teen Choice Movie Night

The Library hosts Teen Choice Movie Night at 5 p.m. Dec. 18. 
Come with your friends and select the movie we show on blu-ray and a large screen TV.

At 12:30 p.m. Nov. 20 the Derby Neck Library hosts Women’s Forum, a monthly discussion group devoted to short stories and Valley history.  
This session will focus on “Cut-Throat Farm” by J.D. Beresford and “Called to the Rescue” by Henry Spicer, two short stories about crimes.  Copies of these stories are available at the library.

Dog whisperer

The Derby Neck Library presents Phil Klein, a certified dog-whisperer, at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 26. He explains how to understand your pet.  
Learn how to interact more smoothly and modify your animal companion’s behavior in a kind manner. Find out how human-animal contacts really happen. 
Please leave your canine companion at home, but bring yourself to an informative, free session.

Talk on Civil War memories
At 6:30 p.m. Jan. 10 the Library offers “The Civil War Career of Maj. Wilbur F. Osborne,” the library’s founder.  
This powerpoint presentation by reference librarian Pat Sweeney includes archival research on the Connecticut First Heavy Artillery using Osborne’s remembrances of the war, among other documents.  
Join us to commemorate Osborne’s mid-January birthday.

Learn about American Indian music, talk tech at Derby Neck Library

DERBY - The Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave., has scheduled a variety of programs in December.

American Indian music
At 3 p.m. Dec. 10 the Library presents “An Introduction to American Indian Music” with Craig Harris.
Percussionist and educator, Harris is the author of the newly published book, Heartbeat, Warble, and the Electric Powwow: American Indian Music. 
He offers a fascinating look at his topic using archival audio recordings, as well as a video presentation. 
This is a free event and no registration is required.

Tech Talks
On Dec. 19 at 6 p.m. and again at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 21, the Library hosts Tech Talks, an information program that meets monthly to offer tips and ideas on what is new in technology and how to best use it in your daily life.

DERBY - The Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave., has scheduled a variety of activities for November.

The Library hosts “Tech Talks” at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 16. This month’s topic is “Energy Deregulation and Opportunities for the Consumer” presented by Ellis Ratner and Joe Paul.  Come learn new information about this important topic and bring your questions. 

At 6 p.m. Nov. 17 the Library hosts “Tabletop Gamers” a group for teens and adults interested in chess, checkers, Go, card games, D & D, and more. Bring your favorites to share or learn new skills in a fun, relaxed atmosphere.  

The Library hosts “Women’s Forum” at 12:30 p.m. Nov. 22. This month reference librarian Patricia Sweeney, Ph.D. gives a powerpoint presentation on the homefront in the Valley towns during World War II. DERBY - Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave., will host a variety of fun activities in August.

Video game tourney

The Library will host a Teen Video Game tournament at 3 p.m. Aug 3.  
Bring a friend or two and come compete for a prize, playing on our Wii U. Free refreshments will be served. 

Dinner and Movie

At 5:30 p.m. Aug. 4 the Library will host Dinner and a Movie, for ages 18 and older.  
This month’s feature film in “Goldfinger” featuring Sean Connery as James Bond, shown on blu-ray and a large screen.  
A free pizza dinner will be served at intermission and movie snacks are also provided. 

Henna Tattoos

The Library presents a Henna Tattoo Program at 2 p.m. Aug. 7. 
Learn the origins and traditions of henna from a presenter from Jamilah Henna Creations. This is a free program open to tweens, teens, and adults. 
Since seating is limited, registration is required.  All attendees get a free, professionally applied tattoo.  

Movie Night

At 5 p.m. Aug. 11 the Library hosts “I-Spy Movie Night” for teens and tweens.  Enjoy a feature film on blu-ray and a large screen and collect clues in an I-Spy game to win a prize.  
Free movie snacks and a pizza dinner will be served.

Osborndale Farm history

At 2 p.m. July 11, the Library hosts a power-point presentation by local history researcher Patricia Sweeney on “The History of Frances Osborne Kellogg’s Osborndale Farm.”  

This event will feature history of the farm from its beginnings, as well as Mrs. Kellogg’s interest in gardening, and her career as an environmentalist.  

Seminar on SATs 

At 6 p.m. July 14 the Library presents a free seminar describing the new SAT format which has not yet been made public knowledge.  

Ellis Ratner will teach both students and parents about this vital topic.

Women's Forum

At 12:30 p.m. July 18 the Library hosts the monthly event, Women’s Forum.  

This discussion group focuses on local history, poetry, and short stories.  

This month we discuss two short stories about unusual marriages - “The Biography of Blade” by Zona Gale and “The Whistle” by Eudora Welty; copies are available at the library. You may wish to bring a light lunch; we serve free coffee and tea.  

Tech Talks

At 6 p.m. July 18 and again at 10:30 a.m. July 20, the Library presents Tech Talks, a monthly program that explains what is new in technology and how to best use it for your own needs.  

This month’s topic is “Cutting the Cord,” which describes how to eliminate traditional telephone and cable television bills, as well as focusing on services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime.  

Puzzle fun

At 2 p.m. July 19, the Library hosts a teen and tween event—“Teen 3-D Puzzles.”  

Come try your luck at this new form of puzzle making and bring a friend or two.  
You may wish to work as a team or individually. Prizes will be awarded and all completed puzzles are yours to keep.  Registration is recommended.

Evening Book Club 

At 6:30 p.m. July 25 the Library hosts the Evening Book Club. This discussion group focuses on shorter fiction, memoirs, and sometimes non-fiction.  
All books selected are by award-winning authors.  

This month’s book is “Daisy Miller” by Henry James; copies are available at the library.

'Tabletop Gamers'

At 6 p.m. July 28 the Library begins a new club open to all teens and tweens—“Tabletop Gamers.” 

We meet each month to enjoy chess, checkers, board games, cards, dice, and more. Join us for the start-up of our newest venture.
