'Turnback Tuesday' features history of cheerleading garb

Turnback Tuesday gets the wool on sweaters worn for cheerleading. The original cheerleaders were male students, with Johnny Campbell recognized as the first official cheerleader in 1898.

In the early 1900s, the style of clothing was large, baggy, button-down sweaters over turtlenecks and pants. School names in large letters were added to the garments. Women joined the cheer in the 1920s but wearing long wool skirts instead of slacks. It was considered an honor to be a cheerleader and represent your school.

This letterman sweater from 1965 is one of the Derby High School items on display at Derby Public Library during January and February.

Cheerleading competition held in Seymour in memory of Nina Poeta

A TV photographer zooms in Saturday on a collage of photos of Nina Poeta, a Seymour High School cheerleader who died Nov. 1, 2014 at age 17 after battling an inoperable brain tumor. 

Seymour High School Varsity Cheerleaders hosted the 10th annual Wildcat Open - "Bring it on for Nina," at Seymour Middle School. This is the third year the competition was dedicated to Nina's memory.

All four teams of the Ansonia Youth Cheerleaders placed first or second Saturday at a regional competition in New Hampshire. They will now move on to the national competition in Florida.


I wish the cheerleaders the best of luck in their next competition!

Seymour cheerleaders seek clothing donations

SEYMOUR - The Seymour High School Cheerleading Program is asking residents to bring 13-gallon trash/lawn/leaf bags filled with gently used clothing to the Community Center, 20 Pine St. from 8-11 a.m. Oct. 25.

Proceeds will benefit the cheerleading program. To arrange a local pickup e-mail seymourspiritclub@gmail.com. Clothing, shoes, and bedding accepted.

Donating your gently used clothing is an easy, no-cost way to help support area children facing adversity.
All donations go directly to helping Big Brothers Big Sisters provide kids with professionally supported one-to-one mentors that change their lives for the better, forever.
