Turnback Tuesday gets the wool on sweaters worn for cheerleading. The original cheerleaders were male students, with Johnny Campbell recognized as the first official cheerleader in 1898.
In the early 1900s, the style of clothing was large, baggy, button-down sweaters over turtlenecks and pants. School names in large letters were added to the garments. Women joined the cheer in the 1920s but wearing long wool skirts instead of slacks. It was considered an honor to be a cheerleader and represent your school.
This letterman sweater from 1965 is one of the Derby High School items on display at Derby Public Library during January and February.
