Derby Police warn public to remain aware after recent purse thefts

Theft Alert – Big Y Plaza

The Derby Police Department is investigating several recent purse thefts that occurred while shoppers were loading groceries at the Big Y Plaza, 656 New Haven Ave.

Our investigations show the suspects are arriving in stolen vehicles and wearing full face masks.

Please take precautions and help protect yourself:

Lock your car – Always secure your vehicle, even for quick stops.

Hide your valuables – Keep purses, backpacks, and other items out of sight.

Stay alert – Pay attention to your surroundings, especially in parking lots and public areas.

Report suspicious activity – Note the location, suspect description, and direction of travel, then call the Derby Police Department immediately.

Your awareness and cooperation are vital to keeping our community safe.

Big Y Community Bag Program to benefit Derby Historical Society

ANSONIA - The Derby Historical Society has been selected as a beneficiary of the Big Y Community Bag Program for the month of January. 

The Big Y Community Bag Program, which launched in January 2019, is a reusable bag program that facilitates community support with the goal to make a difference in the communities where shoppers live and work. 

The Derby Historical Society was selected as the January 2020 beneficiary by store leadership at Big Y, 656 New Haven Ave., Derby. 

The Derby Historical Society will receive a $1 donation every time the $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at this location during January unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag.  

“We are excited that the Big Y continues to show its support to the Derby Historical Society,” said Daniel L. Bosques, Executive Director of the Derby Historical Society. “This donation campaign will continue to help us Preserve our Place in History.” 

The Derby Historical Society is a non-profit based at the David Humphreys House, 37 Elm St. 

Founded in 1946, the Derby Historical Society has served as the Lower Naugatuck Valley’s regional historical organization.

Work is progressing on Big Y supermarket in Derby

Construction continues Friday morning on a Big Y supermarket at the site of a former Walmart at 656 New Haven Ave., Derby. The approximately 60,000-square foot store is expected to open in November.

Demolition makes way for construction of Big Y in Derby

DERBY - I noticed from blog stats that a post I shared Tuesday from Mayor Rich Dziekan about demolition of Walmart drew many readers, so Friday I photographed some work being done. 
A Big Y supermarket will be built in its place at 656 New Haven Ave. and opened in the summer of 2019, officials have said.

Big Y donates $1,000 to Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness in Derby

DERBY - Big Y supermarket in Ansonia recently donated $1,000 to The Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital to help prevent breast cancer in the Lower Naugatuck Valley area.

The donation was part of Big Y's 11th Annual Partners of Hope Campaign to promote breast cancer screening, education, and treatment. Throughout October, Big Y stores sold $1 Partners of Hope pink ribbons. 

The funds collected were distributed to breast cancer organizations throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts.
