DERBY - Seymour Pink recently helped to enhance the accuracy of breast ultrasound screenings at The Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital.

The community breast cancer fundraising organization donated $80,000 to the Center for the purchase of an advanced RS85 Prestige ultrasound system which provides images with superior quality and other technological advances, including elastography, an emerging sonographic imaging technique that provides information on breast lesions in addition to conventional ultrasonography and mammography.

Recent studies show that ultrasonographic elastography (USE) provides higher diagnostic accuracy compared with conventional ultrasonography during breast cancer diagnosis, which eventually helps to reduce false-positive results and therefore is useful in avoiding breast biopsy.

Breast ultrasound uses sound waves to produce images of the inside of the breast. It can show certain breast changes that can be harder to see on mammograms. Ultrasound can be especially helpful in women with dense breast tissue, which can make it hard to see abnormal areas on mammograms.

“The Valley is very near and dear to us and they have supported Seymour Pink for all these years, so this is how we give back to the community,” said Seymour Pink Board of Directors President Mary Deming. “We’re also very tied into helping women with dense breast tissue and this precise technology will help find cancers more easily before they spread.”

DERBY - Seymour Pink recently helped enhance the accuracy and comfort of mammograms at The Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness.

The community breast cancer fundraising organization provided funding to Griffin Health for the purchase of Bella Blankets®, protective coverlets that act as a barrier between the patient’s skin and the mammogram receptor plate to help hold the breast in place and allow for more accurate readings.

When the mammogram is over, the blankets ensure that breasts are easily lifted off, preventing possible skin tears. Additionally, Bella Blankets provide a sanitary barrier and a more comfortable, warmer mammogram which helps elevate the overall patient experience.

“We heard about the Bella Blankets being used at The Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness, and about the comfort and benefit they provide to patients,” said Mary Deming, Seymour Pink Board of Directors President.

“The blankets were described as providing invaluable comfort and making an uncomfortable but necessary procedure much more comfortable. For us at Seymour Pink, it was a perfect fit with our mission.”

In honor of the organization’s longtime support, Griffin Health has named the Center’s patient lounge after Seymour Pink.

HARTFORD - State Sen. Joseph Crisco, Jr., D-Woodbridge, who is Senate Chairman of the Insurance Committee and Vice-Chairman of the Public Health Committee, has been recognized by the Radiological Society of Connecticut for his  “outstanding commitment to quality health care and patient access” for his work on legislation expanding access to various medical imaging tests,  particularly breast mammography, which helps identify breast cancer at an early stage.

“Senator Crisco has been a leading advocate of ensuring that women receive access to the very best breast cancer tests possible. We are delighted to honor him with our legislative award,” said Linda Kowalski, executive director of the Radiological Society of Connecticut.

“I’m honored to have the trust of Connecticut’s radiologists, who do such great work in keeping the people of Connecticut healthy and who I consider to be valuable partners in our quest to improve the lives of thousands of Connecticut residents through regular and low-cost medical imaging,” Crisco said.

The Radiological Society of Connecticut is a professional association of over 520 practicing radiologists in the state as well as retired professionals and resident members.  Members are medical doctors who practice the specialty of interpreting imaging studies for patients.
The Society supports legislation that will enhance patients’ ability to get the imaging tests they need, particularly mammography, which is integral to identifying breast cancer at an early stage.
