Police: Car hits house on Platt Street in Ansonia

ANSONIA - Police are investigating a motor vehicle accident that occurred at 7:40 a.m. Friday on Platt Street, Lt. Patrick Lynch said in a release today.

Police responded to an accident where a car struck a house at 75 Platt St., across the street from the police department.

Officers found a 2003 Hyundai Sonata drove off the road through a fence at 81 Platt St. into the front yard before coming to a rest between a cement wall and 75 Platt St.

Surveillance video from the police department showed the vehicle traveling west on Platt Street at a high rate of speed fail to stop for the stop sign at Platt, Jewett, and Elm Streets. The Hyundai then went through the fence and rolled over at least once before coming to a final rest.

Two people occupied the Hyundai, the driver, a 35-year-old female city resident and a passenger, a 40-year-old New Haven man. Police said they were treated at a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

ANSONIA - On Aug. 25, 2019 at 12:43 p.m., Ansonia police responded to the Stop & Shop at 100 Division St. to investigate a report of a motor vehicle versus pedestrian accident.

The first officer on scene found two injured pedestrians; a car driving in the parking lot struck both pedestrians near the entrance to the store.
The first pedestrian, a 51-year-old female resident of Ansonia, suffered a severe leg injury. Her leg was caught between the vehicle and a steel column causing the amputation of her leg below the knee. The female was transported to a local hospital where she is listed in serious but stable condition.
The second pedestrian, a 60-year-old male resident of Ansonia, suffered head and facial injuries.
He was transported to a local hospital where he is listed in stable condition. The driver of the car, Aurelia Caprio, 88, of Shelton, was treated for minor injuries.

Based on the investigation and eyewitness reports, Caprio was pulling out of a parking spot in the lot when she lost control of her car and struck both pedestrians.
Caprio did not report any physical issues or illness as a cause of the accident and she did not report any mechanical issues with her car. Caprio’s driver’s license was seized and returned to the Department of Motor Vehicles.

'Turnback Tuesday' features 1909 trolley wreck in Seymour

Turnback Tuesday looks at this old postcard showing the trolley wreck of 1909.
On Dec. 26, 1909, the New Haven Trolley Line, trolley No. 265, plunged down a 40-foot embankment in Seymour at Rimmon Pond. There were five passengers and two crew members traveling southbound from Waterbury to Derby.
Unfortunately, the two crew embers did not survive the accident. The passengers were able to crawl to safety out the back end of the trolley.

Recuperation journey: Back to Brooklyn

Happy to report our son, Cameron, who had an accident riding his bike on a beautiful Sunday in October and needed surgery to repair a broken hip, is back to his apartment in Brooklyn.
Yesterday was the big day.
I was happy for him but sad for me. I certainly got used to him being here. We celebrated Halloween, his birthday, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's with him at home.

I'm grateful he is much, much better after eight weeks of physical therapy at Griffin Hospital in Derby.
I watched the whole process and the therapists who worked with him were amazing! I want to give a big shout-out to all of them, and thank them for everything.
They gave him exercises and he followed them at home, which of course also helped hasten his recuperation journey. I hope he continues to do them.
Cameron went from using a walker, to crutches, to one crutch, to a cane. He didn't need the cane around the house, but will need it for a while when he is out in public.

Recuperation journey: Gratitude

As I try my best to help Cameron without bothering him during the day - he can work remotely - I realize how grateful I am to now be able to do whatever he needs.

It's fortuitous that if his horrible bike accident had to happen (there must be a reason it did) it occurred after I had recovered from my kidney transplant.

Thank goodness it didn't happen when I was in my first three critical months of recuperation. I wouldn't have been up to doing what he needs.

Next week I'll mark my six-month anniversary of the transplant. Another reason for me to be grateful.

Dueling recuperation journeys? I suppose so.

Recuperation journey: Rehab starts

On Tuesday Cameron met for the first time with a physical therapist at Griffin Hospital.

We both thought the initial evaluation was extremely thorough. I'm so pleased he is able to have his rehabilitation from his hip surgery there.

Small steps - literally - on his journey back to his normal self.

Recuperation journey: Heading home

It appears that son Cameron and I are going to have dueling recuperation journeys. Yikes!

He has been in a hospital in Brooklyn since Oct. 15 when he had an accident while riding his bike, fractured his hip, and needed surgery.

Now he's learning to use a walker.
Ralph and Allegra are on their way to pick him up this afternoon.

There's really no room for me to go along; we do have a mini-van but Ralph's wheelchair takes up a lot of space in back.
Plus Cameron is 6'3" and needs a bit of space himself.

Wish us luck!

Recuperation journey: Morning reflections

Expect the unexpected, Part 4:
I was busier than usual this past week which was a good thing.
It gave me something to think about other than our Cameron in a hospital bed in Brooklyn recuperating from surgery to repair his fractured hip.
Sadly he had an accident riding his bike last Sunday  and it has been a traumatic time for him.
He has been practicing with a walker and will be on crutches for quite a while.

The good news is Cameron should be discharged Sunday. He will come home for a while for his own recuperation journey and have rehab locally.
Fortunately he does most of his work remotely, so he will be able to get back to it soon.

Note to self: Don't fracture your hip, Patti. It sounds miserable.

Recuperation journey: Expect the unexpected

Cliché yes, but so true.

On Sunday afternoon the phone rang. Caller ID showed our son Cameron's name.
I immediately knew something was not right..he's a quiet guy and doesn't call much. We keep in touch with him through messaging.
He told me he had gotten in an accident riding his bike.
Cameron ran in the
Griffin 5K Sept. 30.

Cam lives in Brooklyn. I think he called from the sidewalk at the accident scene, since he mentioned something about an EMT and waiting for an ambulance. It was a confusing phone call, to say the least.
A few hours later he called from the ER to tell me he had fractured his hip.
Long story short our boy called me around 1:20 a.m. to say he was out of surgery. He has pins in his hip now. I don't know all the details yet.

This morning he messaged me he had eaten breakfast and a friend would be bringing him a phone charger, so I know he's doing OK.

Cameron never got badly hurt when he was growing up; he wasn't the most active or athletic kid around..he was much more of a computer geek from a young age!
But that geekiness has paid off for him in the workplace, I'm happy to say. We're very proud of our guy.

But today I feel so badly for him. He recently has gotten into biking and running and working on getting healthier.

Life isn't fair - to use another trite saying in this post.
