BHcare's Parent Child Resource Center to hold fundraiser in Oxford

OXFORD - BHcare’s Parent Child Resource Center will kick off its annual fundraiser, A Chance to Shine, July 31 with a virtual bike ride. The fundraiser will conclude  Aug. 14 with a 10 a.m. walk and all-day celebration at Quarry Walk, 300 Oxford Road.

Now, more than ever, we need to make an impact on the children and families served by the Parent Child Resource Center.

COVID-19 stay-at-home orders resulted in more isolation and increased stress on children who struggle with mental health and behavioral issues. The number of school-aged children showing up at emergency rooms is increasing rapidly. Children are presenting with severe anxiety, isolation, out of control behaviors, cutting and self-harm, some are even suicidal.

Funds raised at this year’s event will help provide critical treatment and support for children and families in our community.

“Last year, we restructured our ride and walk to a virtual event. Thanks to our amazing community, we raised over $100,000 for the Parent Child Resource Center. This year, we're combining the best of both worlds and holding a virtual bike ride with an in-person walk, music, car show and more at Quarry Walk,” said Danielle DeLong, Development Coordinator, Parent Child Resource Center.

Participants in the virtual bike ride can choose from one of our four scenic bike routes throughout the Valley, or create and complete their own route  between July 31 through Aug. 13.

On Aug. 14, the 10 a.m. in-person walk will raise awareness and funds to support mental health services for children and their families.

The walk will be followed by a day of celebration that will feature WPLR's Chaz and AJ’s Classic Car Show, live music, touch-a-truck, raffles, games and more! Bring your own blankets and snacks or grab a bite at one of the several eateries on site.

Register for the virtual bike ride or walk today at AChancetoShineCT.org.

Sponsors include Haynes Group, Haynes Construction, USI Insurance Services, Peralta Designs, The Bassett Family Fund, William Bassett, and Rose and Kiernan Insurance.

The Parent Child Resource Center is a program of BHcare that provides hope and help for children, adolescents, teens and families struggling with emotional and behavioral issues.

The need for children's mental health services is greater than ever.
The COVID-19 pandemic impacted our clients significantly. Children and families had to quickly adapt with the sudden changes in our world due to the health crisis.
The Parent Child Resource Center is seeing a lot more children with severe anxiety, isolation and depression.
From March 2020 through December 2020, our clinicians provided nearly 11,000 telehealth appointments. The solution is to have more access to mental health resources.

PCRC to host virtual 'A Chance to Shine' fundraiser kickoff June 6

This year, A Chance to Shine is virtual. But our impact is real.

The coronavirus has changed our everyday lives. Despite this, we are still committed to providing life-saving and life-changing services for children and families in the Valley and beyond.

Join us for the 9th annual (and first virtual) A Chance to Shine Bike and Walk.
A pandemic changes our process, but never changes our mission.

Now, more than ever, we need to make an impact on the children and families served by the Parent Child Resource Center.

Stay-at-home orders result in more isolation and increased stress on children who struggle with mental health and behavioral issues. We've had to drastically shift and adjust the ways we provide client services to maintain the highest safety standards during this crisis. But our mission to help children live and lead healthy lives remains steadfast.
At PCRC, we believe in the possibility of getting better.

Join us for our Virtual Kick-Off on June 6! Between June 6 and June 21, meet your personal distance and fundraising goals!

Then celebrate with us at our Virtual Finish Line on June 21!

Registration is open! Join the cause!

Every kid deserves a chance to shine.

When children are faced with problems such as depression, extreme anxiety, abuse, neglect and abandonment, and other types of trauma, they're are unable to recognize their strengths. Emotions can become overwhelmingly big, and behavioral control can easily be lost.

The Parent Child Resource Center provides guidance with innovative, creative and evidence-based programs.

We guide children with school and help them become hopeful, confident, and secure. We work with their parents, teachers and caregivers to ensure what they’ve learned at PCRC is reinforced throughout their daily life.

By riding, walking, donating and sponsoring, you’re giving each child at PCRC A Chance to Shine.

Recuperation journey: Back to Brooklyn

Happy to report our son, Cameron, who had an accident riding his bike on a beautiful Sunday in October and needed surgery to repair a broken hip, is back to his apartment in Brooklyn.
Yesterday was the big day.
I was happy for him but sad for me. I certainly got used to him being here. We celebrated Halloween, his birthday, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's with him at home.

I'm grateful he is much, much better after eight weeks of physical therapy at Griffin Hospital in Derby.
I watched the whole process and the therapists who worked with him were amazing! I want to give a big shout-out to all of them, and thank them for everything.
They gave him exercises and he followed them at home, which of course also helped hasten his recuperation journey. I hope he continues to do them.
Cameron went from using a walker, to crutches, to one crutch, to a cane. He didn't need the cane around the house, but will need it for a while when he is out in public.
