Recuperation journey: Back to Brooklyn

Happy to report our son, Cameron, who had an accident riding his bike on a beautiful Sunday in October and needed surgery to repair a broken hip, is back to his apartment in Brooklyn. 
Yesterday was the big day. 
I was happy for him but sad for me. I certainly got used to him being here. We celebrated Halloween, his birthday, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's with him at home.

I'm grateful he is much, much better after eight weeks of physical therapy at Griffin Hospital in Derby. 
I watched the whole process and the therapists who worked with him were amazing! I want to give a big shout-out to all of them, and thank them for everything. 
They gave him exercises and he followed them at home, which of course also helped hasten his recuperation journey. I hope he continues to do them. 
Cameron went from using a walker, to crutches, to one crutch, to a cane. He didn't need the cane around the house, but will need it for a while when he is out in public.

Recuperation journey: A slow process

Our son Cameron - who has a fractured hip from a horrible bike accident three weeks ago - had his first physical therapy session this morning at Griffin Hospital. 


He saw a different therapist than when he was evaluated last week.
Both women impressed me with their professionalism and thoroughness. 
According to Cam's upcoming appointment schedule he will also be seen by two other therapists.

I'm happy to see him being helped by a great team. And extremely grateful that I can bring him to rehab at Griffin Hospital, just two miles from home.

On Tuesday Cameron met for the first time with a physical therapist at Griffin Hospital. 

We both thought the initial evaluation was extremely thorough. I'm so pleased he is able to have his rehabilitation from his hip surgery there.

We can now check off #1 on the to-do list.

Our son Cameron had surgery two weeks ago for a fractured hip after a bike accident. 
He and I just returned from an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon. I'm sure the doctor doesn't particularly like taking over a case that was started by another surgeon but it is what it is.
He was fine and didn't say anything like that but still I wonder.

Next up this evening is a physical therapy evaluation at Griffin Hospital in Derby. 
Coincidentally I'm bringing Cam to the same room that our Movin' On Fitness exercise class is held on Tuesdays. 
The only reason we're not having class today is because it's Halloween and the Trick or Treaters take precedence.

Recuperation journey: Stocking up on medical equipment

Bed rails, bed tables, and cushions, oh my. But fortunately no bed pans.

We have a fully-accessible ranch house but we still need more stuff. Ralph uses a wheelchair and now we have a walker user - our son Cameron recovering from hip surgery - here too. 
Thank goodness for online shopping. 

I suppose our mail carrier and our FedEx and UPS delivery people aren't happy with us. 
It is almost a daily occurrence for us to get a delivery.

Ralph recently purchased needed equipment  and that was before Cameron's bike accident, fractured hip and subsequent recuperation journey.

The garage is now full of cardboard boxes from a variety of shipments. The cat has enjoyed sitting in a few of them, but he bores easily and the fun doesn't last.

Expect the unexpected, Part 5:
Unfortunately our son, Cameron - with a fractured hip - isn't coming home today. 

The physical therapists working with him aren't ready to release him for discharge from the hospital. He's now going through his own recuperation journey. 

Stroke support group to host presentation at Griffin Hospital in Derby

The Griffin Hospital Life after Stroke Support Group will host a free presentation about exercising at home. / Contributed photo

DERBY - The Griffin Hospital Life after Stroke Support Group will host a free presentation about exercising at home on from noon-1 p.m. Nov. 10 at the Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital, 350 Seymour Ave.

Griffin Hospital Physical Therapy students will discuss and demonstrate a home exercise program that includes seated and balance techniques for individuals of different levels of independence and strength.

The Life after Stroke Support Group at Griffin Hospital meets monthly and is open to stroke survivors between the ages of 20 and 65. 

This group provides information from health experts, resources and support for individuals who have suffered a stroke in the prime of their lives. Caregivers are also welcome.
