Derby Neck Library to hold webinar on suffrage movement in Valley

DERBY - Join Pat Sweeney, Derby Neck Library research librarian, at 10 a.m. July 18 in a free webinar as she discusses the local suffragette movement and Frances Osborne Kellogg.

A lifelong Derby resident, Kellogg was an agriculturalist and businesswoman who supported the 19th amendment.

The webinar will feature a historical perspective of this time period and local events.

Center in Derby to host program on Frances Osborne Kellogg

DERBY - Are you a Downton Abbey fan? Are you interested in local history? 

Come to the Kellogg Environmental Center and learn about the life of Frances Osborne Kellogg during the early 20th century. 

The program, led by Susan Robinson, Osborne Homestead Museum education curator,

will be held from 1-2:30 p.m. Sept. 26 at the Kellogg Environmental Center with a tour of the Osborne Homestead Museum following the presentation.

Like the Crawleys on Downton Abbey, the Osborne family were wealthy landowners with a daughter as their only surviving heir. 

Learn about the fortunes and tribulations of the Osbornes through the lens of the award-winning television series Downton Abbey. The program is free, but donations are gratefully accepted. 

Refreshments will be served.

The Kellogg Environmental Center is open 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. The Osborne Homestead Museum is open for free guided tours on Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturdays from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. Both are operated by the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

Victorian tea party planned at Kellogg Center in Derby

DERBY - Come and learn about Victorian culture at a Victorian Tea etiquette workshop at the Kellogg Environmental Center from 1-2:30 p.m. July 25.

This program will take visitors back in time to the late Victorian Era (1837-1901) when Frances Osborne Kellogg would have been a young lady in her 20s hosting and going to tea parties.

During the workshop, visitors will learn Victorian tea etiquette and the difference between the types of tea services, such as low and high tea.
Participants will understand and demonstrate the social “do’s and don’ts” of a tea party.

At the end of the program, visitors can take home handcrafted teas and teabags and tour the Osborne Homestead Museum where antique tea sets will be on display.

The workshop fee is $5, and refreshments will be served.

The Kellogg Environmental Center, 500 Hawthorne Ave., is operated by the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. It is open 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
