Dziekan asks contributions for Derby service members to brighten holidays

DERBY - Mayor Richard Dziekan is calling upon the greater Derby community to make the holiday season a little brighter for local military families.

In keeping with Derby tradition, Dziekan is asking for monetary contributions for local men and women serving at home or abroad in the military.  

These contributions will be equally distributed among Derby service members as a gift of appreciation from the community.

Derby’s Servicemen and Women’s Fund, also supported by the Catholic War Veterans St. Michael’s Post 1562, was created as a way to express appreciation for the sacrifices our brave men and women make to protect our freedoms.

Please send contributions for the Servicemen and Women’s Fund to Mayor Richard Dziekan, Servicemen and Women’s Fund, Derby City Hall, 1 Elizabeth St., Derby, CT 06418.  

Checks should be made payable to Derby Servicemen and Women’s Fund.

In addition to monetary donations we are also looking for the names of current members in the armed services who are from Derby.

Educational program for veterans, family members slated in Shelton

Seymour 6th graders send care packages to soldiers in Afghanistan

SEYMOUR - The Seymour Middle School 6th grade social studies classes, led by Ashley Castaldi and Chris Alcutt, sponsored a care package drive to collect items such as toiletries, snacks, and K-9 supplies for soldiers who are currently deployed overseas. 

The purpose of this drive was to promote good citizenship, volunteerism, and to participate in an activity that promotes social awareness. 
This activity was centered on the celebration of veterans. The students were able to understand what sacrifices soldiers make, such as not having access to everyday items they may take for granted. 
The care packages were sent to 6th grade teacher Dina Garrow’s brother-in-law’s unit currently stationed in Afghanistan.

Seymour seeks names of active-duty military from town

SEYMOUR - The Town Clerk's office is reminding residents to submit the names of service members who are actively serving in the military.

Their complete service address, as well as their Seymour residence address, and the name and telephone number of the person submitting the request should be submitted to the Town Clerk.

The Town of Seymour would like all Seymour servicemen and women currently serving in the military to receive a Christmas check from the Richard R. Pearson Memorial Fund.

Ansonia seeks names, addresses of military personnel for Christmas checks

ANSONIA -The mayor's office is currently seeking the names of active duty military personnel from Ansonia, so the city can mail them a Christmas check for the holiday. 

The city needs the name, rank, branch of service, and address of the individual.

If anyone would like to make a donation to the city's military personnel, mail a check to the Mayor's Office, 253 Main St., Ansonia, CT 06401.

Food Truck Festival to benefit Derby High Post Prom activities

DERBY - The second annual Food Truck Fest hosted by the Derby High School Post Prom Committee will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at Lou DeFilippo Field at the Ryan Sports Complex on Chatfield Street.

The event is being held in conjunction with the Military Appreciation football game - Derby High School v. Oxford High School at 2 p.m. There will be eight food trucks and a handful of table vendors. 
Raffles and the decades football alumni will be on hand to reunite with others and to reminisce.

There is free parking, and gate charge is $5 from 1-3 p.m. only. Those with a Military ID get into the event free all day.

Proceeds from the food truck festival will benefit post prom activities, while proceeds from the football game will benefit local military families. 
The event is being held in conjunction with the Derby High School Athletics Department.

Derby to hold annual holiday drive for military personnel

DERBY - As in years past, Mayor Anita Dugatto is reaching out to the community for monetary contributions in support of Derby veterans and their families this holiday season.

Money collected will be distributed to local men and women serving in the military, at home or abroad, through the Derby Servicemen and Women’s Fund.

The annual holiday drive is generously supported by Derby’s Catholic War Veterans St. Michael’s Post 1562.
“This effort is one small way to express our appreciation as a community for the sacrifices our servicemen and women make year round to protect our freedoms and security,” Dugatto said.

CWV in Derby to host House of Heroes fundraiser

DERBY - Catholic War Veterans Post 1562, 112 Derby Ave., will hold its fourth annual fundraiser to benefit House of Heroes Connecticut at 2 p.m. July 25.

House of Heroes provides no-cost home repairs to military personnel and their spouses.

Cost is $20 per person; kids under 12 admitted free. The event is open to the public.
There will be food, a raffle, games, and a cash bar, with music by Murray the Wheel.

Donations are welcomed and appreciated.

Ansonia seeks names of active-duty military members

ANSONIA - For over 40 years the Comcowich-Carver Post 597 VFW, Ansonia, sent holiday greetings and a monetary gift to all Ansonia natives on active duty in the United States Armed Forces.

The Funds came from private donations as well as Post members soliciting funds at one Ansonia football game each year.

With the average age of the VFW well into their 70s, this practice became more and more difficult and the membership requested the City of Ansonia assume the project.
In 2002 the Board of Aldermen authorized the City of Ansonia to continue the practice and the Mayor's office took over administration of the program, with several servicemen and women receiving checks, which were funded by private donations.

This memorandum serves as a request to all residents to send the name of any known active-duty service personnel from Ansonia, along with their own name and address, to the following address by Dec. 17, 2014 so that this tradition will continue.
