Derby Town Clerk extends office hours this Friday, Saturday for absentee ballots

DERBY - Town Clerk Marc J. Garofalo has announced the Derby Town Clerk’s office will be open for extended hours Friday, Oct. 23 from 12:30-4 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 24, from 9 a.m.-noon.

The extension is to accommodate city residents who want to apply for an absentee ballot or return their completed absentee ballot.  

Derby City Hall normally closes at 12:30 p.m. on Fridays due to other extended hours from Monday to Thursday.

 

“During this hectic time of year and with the public health crisis still a major concern for many residents, we wanted to offer Derby voters the opportunity to exercise their voting rights in a safe and less stressful setting," Garofalo said. 

He indicated his office has issued more than 1,600 absentee ballots and received back more than 1,000 completed ballots.

 

Anyone entering City Hall must wear a mask and practice social distancing.  The Town Clerk’s office staff will be available to issue absentee ballots.  

The ballots may be taken home by the applicants or completed on-site and returned to the Town Clerk’s office.

 

“In this historic presidential election, we want to make sure that every Derby voter has multiple opportunities to cast their vote freely and safely either by absentee ballot or in person on Election Day, all in accordance with the laws of the State of Connecticut,"Garofalo said. 

He has served as Derby Town/City Clerk since 2013, is a Certified Connecticut Town Clerk and Vice President of the New Haven County Town Clerk’s Association.

Seymour seeks names of active-duty military from town

SEYMOUR - The Town Clerk's office is reminding residents to submit the names of service members who are actively serving in the military.

Their complete service address, as well as their Seymour residence address, and the name and telephone number of the person submitting the request should be submitted to the Town Clerk.

The Town of Seymour would like all Seymour servicemen and women currently serving in the military to receive a Christmas check from the Richard R. Pearson Memorial Fund.

Sad news to share: James J. Butler, Derby fire official, dead at 50

Derby Town Clerk Marc Garofalo e-mailed this message late this afternoon:

"It is with deep regret that I inform you of the passing of James J. Butler.  He was the son of James R. Butler, a member and past Chair of the Derby Board of Apportionment and Taxation and the late Josephine DiDonato Butler.  He was the father of Julianna Butler, James Butler and Sarah Butler.  He was the brother of Barbara Butler and Janice Butler. 

"James J. Butler, 50, was a past Chief of the Derby Fire Department and an inspector with the Derby Fire Marshal’s Office.  He was a member of the Paugassett Hook and Ladder Company #4 of the Derby Fire Department for more than 30 years.

"Please join Mayor Anita Dugatto and the entire City of Derby in extending our sincere sympathy and condolences to the entire Butler family during this difficult time.
