Griffin Hospital in Derby to host talk for caregivers of special needs students


DERBY - The Community Health Resource Center at Griffin Hospital will host a free talk Dec. 6 to help caregivers of students with special needs advocate for their loved ones' education.
Kevin Daly, Health Care Information Specialist with PATH Parent to Parent/Family Voices of Connecticut, will lead “The ‘Soft Skills’ of Special Education Advocacy,” a presentation for parents of students with disabilities who want to sharpen their advocacy skills. 

Topics include: best practices for school-home communications; how to get involved in the decision making process; how to prepare for school meetings (including PPT and 504); obtaining a free copy of your child’s school records; where to find help when you need it.
Daly has worked as a special education advocate with hundreds of Connecticut families for more than 20 years.

PATH/FVCT is a statewide grassroots parent organization that has been around for over 30 years. PATH/FVCT is dedicated to offering excellence in emotional and informational support to families, promote partnerships with families of diverse backgrounds, and collaborate with health care providers and community organizations to improve services and policies that serve our children. 
PATH/FVCT has the support of two of the largest networks of families of children with unique abilities and special health care needs.

Griffin Hospital in Derby to present 'Mindfulness and Meditation'


DERBY - Griffin Hospital’s Community Health Resource Center will host a free program on meditation from 12:30-1:30 p.m. July 17. 
The program will be held at the hospital, 130 Division St.

Laura Murphy, Planetree Services Supervisor, will host “Mindfulness and Meditation,” a discussion of these therapeutic practices and their health benefits. 
There will also be an opportunity to participate in a group meditation and mindfulness session.

This program is part of a series of free, educational forums hosted by the Community Health Resource Center in an effort to help improve the health of the community.

Learn about volunteering at Griffin Hospital in Derby

DERBY -The Community Health Resource Center at Griffin Hospital will host a free presentation about how volunteering can help individuals get or stay healthy from 9:30-11 a.m. June 9.

Diane Betkoski, Director of Planetree Programs & Services and Laura Murphy, Planetree Services Supervisor, will host “Realizing the Health Benefits of Volunteering,” a free presentation on how and why helping others can have a direct effect on your physical, emotional, and social being.

There will also be information about the many volunteer opportunities at Griffin Hospital.

Griffin in Derby to host workshop on retirement planning

DERBY - The Community Health Resource Center at Griffin Hospital, 130 Division St., will host a free educational workshop on planning for retirement at 6:30 p.m. March 19.

Michael Alimo and David Weyner, of U.S.A. Financial & Tax Services, will host “Planning for a Safe Retirement,” a free workshop about techniques to help build a successful retirement plan.

Discussion highlights will include:


The three-legged stool approach and how to support your needs in the future.
The money “buckets” in retirement….Taxable, Tax Deferred, Tax Free
Will I outlive my money in retirement? How can I avoid this?
What is your money earmarked for? Income, growth, preservation, legacy?
How does timing of Social Security impact my plan? When should I elect benefits?
What are the effects of inflation and stock market risk on my savings?
How do taxes play a role in my future retirement plans?
What happens to my plan if/when my spouse predeceases me?
What impact can medical emergency and the potential need for Long Term Care have?

Griffin Hospital in Derby to host talk on ancient healing art

DERBY - Griffin Hospital’s Community Health Resource Center, 130 Division St., invites the community to a discussion on the healing aspects of Emei Qigong at 1 p.m. Feb. 13.

Patricia Bolger, of Qi Artisans in Wallingford, will host the discussion on Emei Qigong, an ancient system for health, healing, rejuvenation and spiritual development that encompasses physical forms and exercises, meditation, nutrition, healing techniques and spirituality. 

This Q&A will focus on the healing aspects of Emei Qigong and will offer participants a brief experience with the ancient art.

This free program is part of the Community Health Resource Center at Griffin Hospital’s Planetree Programs Health Education, a series of forums to help improve the health of the community.
