Derby Historical Society to demonstrate open hearth cooking

ANSONIA - Visit the Derby Historical Society at the David Humphreys House from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 14) as docents demonstrate Open Hearth Cooking.

The house is at 37 Elm St.

A variety of 18th-Century seasonal favorites will be prepared over a roaring fire and visitors will be offered small samples.

Tours of the Humphreys House will be available.

The gift shop also will be open during this event for a head start on your holiday shopping.

Pick up a book on local history or an old-fashioned toy for your favorite youngster, no batteries required. Soy candles, natural soaps, and historical calendars all made locally in Ansonia and Derby will be for sale. 

Refreshments will be served. 
Admission is $5 donation.

American Legion Post to host Veterans Day ceremony in Ansonia

ANSONIA - Gordon-Visselli American Legion Post 50 is hosting the city’s annual Veterans Day Ceremony at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Veterans Park, next to City Hall, 253 Main St.

Veterans and the public throughout the Valley are invited to attend and help recognize those men and women who have served their country in military service at great sacrifice to themselves and their families.

The American Legion is proud to host this ceremony as well as participate in all patriotic, military and veteran events and causes which bring public awareness to those who have served and continue to serve in the uniform of their country.

Griffin Hospital in Derby schedules workshop on maximizing benefits

DERBY - The Community Health Resource Center at Griffin Hospital, 130 Division St., will host a free educational workshop on Social Security at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 16.

Michael Alimo and David Weyner, of U.S.A. Financial & Tax Services, will host “Strategies For Maximizing Your Social Security Benefits,” a workshop about ways to boost benefits and substantially enhance lifetime retirement income.

Discussion highlights will include:

• Strategies to maximize Social Security benefits

• How benefits are calculated and simple strategies available to increase them

• Coordinating benefits: Why married couples have added options for when to apply

• How Social Security benefits are taxed

• What are the taxable implications of collecting benefits and continuing to work part-time

This program is part of a series of free, educational forums hosted by the Community Health Resource Center in an effort to help improve the health of the community.

Derby Senior Center to hold craft fair Saturday

DERBY - The Derby Senior Center will holds its annual Holiday Craft Fair from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Saturday. 

The fair will feature a white elephant table, raffles, arts and crafts, handmade knitted and crocheted items, and food! 

There also will be a bake sale. Admission is free.

The senior center is at 293 Main St.

Wesley Village in Shelton holds 7th annual race

SHELTON - Wesley Village recently hosted its seventh annual 5K and Fun Walk on their senior living campus on Long Hill Avenue. 

Truly a “Race for All Generations,” the event boasted more than 300 total participants, 33 of which were over the age of 70, with the oldest runner age 93! 

All participants (some in Halloween costume) crossed the finish line at the front entrance of Bishop Wicke Health and Rehabilitation Center, to the roaring cheers of dozens of Wesley Village residents, staff, volunteers, and family members.

The 5K Run featured a flat out and back course sponsored by C.E. Floyd Co., along with a 1-Mile Fun Walk sponsored by M&T Bank and a Kids Run, sponsored by Merit Insurance. 

The community event was coordinated with the help of JB Sports Event Management. 

Race festivities were hosted across the beautiful Wesley Village campus and included trick-or-treating, face painting, a bounce house, music, food, Rita’s Italian Ice, and a trophy and awards ceremony. 
Proceeds from the race benefitted award-winning resident programs at Wesley Village.

Wesley Village would like to thank the many local sponsors and participants who helped to make this year’s race a huge success.

Learn to use water color paints at Derby Public Library

DERBY - The Derby Public Library will host another popular Water Color Painting Workshop at 6 p.m. Dec. 1.

Ages 18 and over are invited to enjoy this fun evening that results in 

fabulous art! 
Participants will go home with new friends, great memories, and a newly-created masterpiece that will show off your “inner-artist.” 

No experience?  No problem!

Derby resident Rich DiCarlo, President of the Valley Arts Council, will guide you step-by-step on this creative journey as you learn the ins and outs of creating your own 

watercolor painting.  
No previous artistic experience necessary - the class is great for beginners or seasoned professionals.

Snacks will be provided.  

It is promised to be a surprisingly easy and fun way to spend an evening!
