Virtual Teen Game Nights slated in June at Derby Public Library

DERBY - Derby Public Library invites all tweens and teens ages 10 to 17 to Virtual Teen Game Nights at 6:30 p.m June 1,15, and 29. 

Participants will have library-provided materials to compete in the classic games of skill and chance, “YA”TZEE and FARKLE. 

Zoom access link will be provided via email three days prior to game date.

Registrants will be contacted to coordinate game materials pickup.

Beacon Falls Public Library to hold Tie-Dye Party to kick off summer reading

BEACON FALLS - This program will be held outside the Town Hall, 10 Maple Ave. Registration is required- please sign up for a time slot on Eventbrite or in the library, 10 Maple Ave., when signing up for the Summer Reading Program.

Hewitt Center at Griffin Hospital in Derby to offer Saturday hours for mammograms

DERBY - The Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital, 350 Seymour Ave., will have extended Saturday hours from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. starting June 5 to provide individuals with more opportunities and flexibility in scheduling breast screening mammograms. The United States Preventive Services Task Force recommends that women who are 50 to 74 years old and are at average risk for breast cancer get a mammogram every two years. Women who are 40 to 49 years old should talk to their doctor or other healthcare professional about when to start and how often to get a mammogram. Derby Neck Library to host author of Lessons from Apartheid via Zoom

DERBY - The Black Lives Matter protests that swept through the nation in 2020 made many Americans question their own beliefs and long held assumptions about race and privilege in America.

Join us [at Derby Neck Library] on Tuesday, June 8 at 6 p.m. via Zoom for this educational and multicultural presentation with author Manju Soni. 

Manju will give a brief overview of her experiences growing up in South Africa under the system of racial separation called apartheid, and draws parallels with America’s own past and present experiences with racism. 

She will trace the drivers of racism in both countries, and reflect on her personal experiences of how South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission worked to dismantle apartheid, and the lessons America can learn from it.

Manju Soni was born and grew up under apartheid in South Africa, where she trained as an ophthalmologist. At a young age she was introduced to social justice issues in high school during the student protests called the Soweto Uprising. 

Then, apartheid police killed close to 200 people, most of them middle and high school students. 

Her debut nonfiction book, When Lions Roared: How Brave Young People Defied Apartheid, captures her experiences during these tumultuous times.

Derby Neck Library to host 'Horizon Wings' program in garden

DERBY - Ever wish you could experience the thrill of being up close to a magnificent eagle, hawk, falcon, or owl? 

Now is your chance! Horizon Wings is bringing a few of these extraordinary birds right to our garden [at Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave.]

All of the birds in Horizon Wings' care are unable to survive in the wild, but have overcome their individual challenges and have learned to adapt to their new lives as feathered ambassadors. 

Be inspired by their individual stories of survival, explore fascinating facts about each species, and learn what you can do to help them.

Beacon Falls Public Library to host study break program with reptiles

BEACON FALLS - Beacon Falls Public Library will host a low-key, low-stress program from 2-3 p.m. Saturday that allows for hands-on time with some very chill lizards.

Due to the nature of this program, it is limited to current Grades 6-12. There can be no exceptions. Space is very limited; registration is required. 

This program is in person (to be held outdoors), and will require masks, and social distancing when possible. 

Participants must be able to be responsible about following safety guidelines and follow instructions about the handling of the reptiles.

The Library is at 10 Maple Ave.
