Openings available at Salvation Army summer camp in Ashford

ANSONIA - Salvation Army Greater Valley Major Dora Garcia said Thursday there are openings available for local children to attend Camp CONNRI in Ashford this summer.

She said the openings are for children ages 8-12.

Established in 1979, The Salvation Army-run, Christian camp is situated on 272 acres in Ashford, overlooking a 50-acre lake.

Shelton Democrats to sponsor conversation at Plumb Memorial Library

SHELTON - Shelton Democrats are sponsoring a series of Community Conversations as part of their commitment to educate and engage the community on issues that matter most to residents on a local, state, and national level.

The first Community Conversation will be 'Building a Community of Respect: Why Words Still Matter,' presented in partnership with the Anti-Defamation League at 6:30 p.m. March 20 at Plumb Memorial Library, 65 Wooster St. 

This conversation will take an important look at the rise of hate speech, intolerance, and the role community organizations and citizens play in standing together against hate. 

This conversation will feature a panel of speakers including Steve Ginsburg, Director of the Anti-Defamation League;  Shawn Sequeira, Acting Chief of Shelton Police; Christopher Clouet, Superintendent of Shelton Public Schools; and the Rev. Lucille Fritz, Pastor, Huntington Congregational Church.

David Gioiello, Chairman of the Shelton Democrats said,  "Members of the public are invited to attend and participate in this free event, and we look forward to beginning the Community Conversation series."

Local lawmaker appears on Access TV show in Hartford

State Sen. George S. Logan, R-Ansonia, left, recently taped his first edition of “The Senate Reports with Sen. George S. Logan” at the Hartford-based AccessTV.org studio with Access TV videographer J. Stan McCauley.  

In the show’s debut, Logan, a freshman legislator, discusses the reasons why he was inspired to run for public office and his efforts to improve the quality of life for everyone in Connecticut.

Geese, gulls enjoy afternoon on Pickett's Pond in Derby

DERBY - These birds were taking advantage of the spring-like temperatures Wednesday at Pickett's Pond in Osbornedale State Park.

They seemed to have chosen specific sides of the pond, and were keeping their distance from each other. All were facing the same direction toward the sun.
Unfortunately I couldn't get all of them in the same frame. That would require a wide-angle lens and "fancier" equipment.

Derby Public Library to start 12th season of Sports Talks April 6

DERBY - The Derby Public Library will begin its 12th season of Sports Talks at 10 a.m. April 6.  
These informal sessions will be held every Thursday morning throughout the baseball season.  

They will again be facilitated by radio talk show host, author, and Major League Baseball Rules Consultant Rich Marazzi of Ansonia.  

Each session will include trivia contests, videos, lively conversation and more.  
All ages, from rookies through veterans, are invited to join Rich and his group of Silver Sluggers.  

No registration is necessary.

Food drive results show Valley has a heart

Saturday's 15th annual Valley Has a Heart food drive in numbers:  15 years of collecting food in wintertime 3 food drive sites 6 hours standing outside 27 degrees (8 with wind chill) 2 site sponsors 2,700 wish lists printed 3 boxes of hot chocolate 10 food runners 75 volunteers 4,723 food items collected $3,717.68 raised 7 Lower Naugatuck Valley towns served Top site for food donations: Ansonia Top site for monetary donations: Shelton Thank you everybody who helped make it happen!  From all of the volunteers who stood out in the cold  handing out wish lists and collecting donations to the  volunteers at Spooner House putting everything away,  to all the people who drove donations back to Spooner  House and to everyone who contributed to make this  big impact! A special shout-out goes to volunteers from these  organizations: Shelton High School National Honor Society Church of the Assumption Youth Group Holy Rosary Confirmation Class Sound Tigers Booster Club St. Augustine Church Seymour United Methodist Church Young Emerging Professionals Shelton High School Boys Lacrosse Team and all the families and individuals who helped out!
