Derby libraries join for livestream conversation with bestselling author

DERBY - Join us in conversation with bestselling author and humorist Michael Perry @sneezingcow, whose collection of genre-spanning works encapsulates the experiences–and the magic–of rural town communities and the everyday people who reside in them.

In his memoir, Population: 485, Perry tells a frequently comic tale leavened with moments of heartbreaking delicacy and searing tragedy.
Jesus Cow, Perry’s fiction debut, is a hilarious yet sincere exploration of faith and the foibles of modern life.
Livestream will be Wednesday, March 4 at 2 p.m. in partnership with Derby Neck and Derby Public Libraries.

Salvation Army of Ansonia: Black History Month is time to reflect, honor legacy

From The Salvation Army - Ansonia Facebook page:

February is Black History Month—a time to honor the faith, leadership, resilience, and service of Black individuals who have shaped our communities and our shared history.

At The Salvation Army, we recognize the profound impact of Black leaders, officers, soldiers, and volunteers whose dedication helped strengthen this movement and advance its mission. Their legacy continues to inspire us as we serve with dignity, compassion, and love.

This month, we reflect, learn, and celebrate the stories that remind us what it means to truly do the most good—together.

Derby Hall of Famer of the Week features Mormon leader

Orson Hyde

The Derby Hall of Famer of the Week will be a surprise to most.
He was born in Oxford in 1805, but he was raised in Derby because of the death of both his parents.

At the age of 14 he walked to Kirkland, Ohio to be with Nathan Wheeler who had been raising him in Derby until the failure of his business led him to relocate to Kirkland.
At that point, Orson Hyde converted to the Mormon religion and began his rise in the leadership of the church! He even became one of the Twelve Apostles who were the leaders of the Mormon faith.
There's much more to the fascinating story of his life including missionary work in Jerusalem and eight wives and more than 30 children!

Recuperation journey 2.0: New month, new personal blog post

I recently wrote an article for our church newsletter about God’s perfect timing in my life. I'm sharing a slightly edited version here.

I witnessed that timing on a November night in 2007. My 83-year old mother unfortunately had been a smoker for her whole life. As it turned out, cigarettes were almost her undoing.

She had gone to bed unaware that she had dropped a stll-lit cigarette in between the couch cushions. That’s what the Fire Marshal had concluded. That cigarette must have smoldered for quite a while because by around 2 a.m., black smoke was coming out of her house.

If her neighbor hadn’t come home at just that time and seen the smoke and called 9-1-1, my mother would not have survived.

An alert volunteer firefighter happened to live a short way down the road. He quickly arrived on the scene, put a ladder up to the bedroom window and grabbed my petite mother who was frantically waving out the window. This hero brought her down the ladder to safety!

Her travail didn’t end there. She had suffered smoke inhalation that landed her in two hospitals for treatment. We welcomed her home on Thanksgiving Day that year. We were all thankful indeed she was finally on the mend.

God’s grace intervened that night. His watching over my mother until help arrived was no coincidence. It was truly a blessing on our family. I believe the neighbor’s quick actions were part of God’s perfect timing.

Her rescue gave my mother another nine years. And it afforded her the opportunity to attend both of her grandchildren’s college graduations and witness them both starting their careers.

Life can change in the blink of an eye, whether through an accident, fire, or diagnosis of a serious illness. I believe how our lives go forward is part of God’s perfect plan for each of us.

Recuperation journey: Transplant forum inspires

As a kidney recipient I was invited to the sixth annual Join the Journey event Saturday at Messiah Baptist Church in Bridgeport. I'm so glad I was able to attend.
I heard some amazing stories of strength and resilience recounted by other kidney transplant recipients, and a liver transplant recipient who now needs a kidney.
I'm pictured here with Joyce Albert, senior clinical transplant coordinator at Yale-New Haven Hospital, left, and Devon Greenwood, center, who donated a kidney to someone she didn't know.
Her husband, William, was working and unable to attend. He needed a transplant last year and received one from my sister-in-law, Suzanne Watson, who stepped forward and was tested to be a donor when she learned I needed a kidney.
Devon Greenwood said her husband is doing fine, as is she. I'm happy to report that Suzanne, my husband's sister, is also feeling fine.

Before going to the program I wrote this post about not being able to take anything from the breakfast buffet.
I had no problem getting food straight from the kitchen. All of the church women working there were so friendly and accommodating to visitors!
