Recuperation journey 2.0: New month, new personal blog post

I recently wrote an article for our church newsletter about God’s perfect timing in my life. I'm sharing a slightly edited version here.

I witnessed that timing on a November night in 2007. My 83-year old mother unfortunately had been a smoker for her whole life. As it turned out, cigarettes were almost her undoing.

She had gone to bed unaware that she had dropped a stll-lit cigarette in between the couch cushions. That’s what the Fire Marshal had concluded. That cigarette must have smoldered for quite a while because by around 2 a.m., black smoke was coming out of her house.

If her neighbor hadn’t come home at just that time and seen the smoke and called 9-1-1, my mother would not have survived.

An alert volunteer firefighter happened to live a short way down the road. He quickly arrived on the scene, put a ladder up to the bedroom window and grabbed my petite mother who was frantically waving out the window. This hero brought her down the ladder to safety!

Her travail didn’t end there. She had suffered smoke inhalation that landed her in two hospitals for treatment. We welcomed her home on Thanksgiving Day that year. We were all thankful indeed she was finally on the mend.

God’s grace intervened that night. His watching over my mother until help arrived was no coincidence. It was truly a blessing on our family. I believe the neighbor’s quick actions were part of God’s perfect timing.

Her rescue gave my mother another nine years. And it afforded her the opportunity to attend both of her grandchildren’s college graduations and witness them both starting their careers.

Life can change in the blink of an eye, whether through an accident, fire, or diagnosis of a serious illness. I believe how our lives go forward is part of God’s perfect plan for each of us.

Recuperation journey: Sentimental sunset

I saw this stunning sunset from the Derby Greenway four years ago today.
Sadly, as it turned out, this beautiful sky occurred at the same time my mother passed away, making this photo one I will always cherish.

Recuperation journey: Throwback Thursday

First day of school in 1997.

My mom would come over on the first day of school when the kids were little to see them off on the bus.
Wonderful memories! 💞 💞 💞

Recuperation journey: Cardinals among us

"May you come to find comfort in and remember:
Cardinals appear when angels are near.
So go now, sit outside and drink your tea.
Keep a look out for the little red bird —
It is there, your loved one will be."

- Victoria McGovern

I love this cardinal ornament I bought from a talented friend who lives in Seymour.
She had posted a photo of it online and I was one of many, many readers who wanted one. I'm wondering how many she created!

My mother died in 2016 and since then I have seen so many cardinals in our yard that I had never noticed before.
I like to think it's a sign she's visiting me and watching over our family.

Recuperation journey: A different time ~ Memory from 1938

I was going through a box of my mother's things Saturday and just happened to find a book with an Independence Day theme.

Today is the perfect day to share my discovery.

My mother was given this book from the town's school district when she graduated from eighth grade on June 17,1938.

In the back are pages titled "Names of My Teachers,"Names of My Classmates," and "My School Chums."
Every person who signed the book used cursive. Sadly that wouldn't happen today, 80 years later.

What a beautiful graduation gift for the students!

Recuperation journey: My mother in 1932

Today I forced myself to peek into a box in which my mother kept old photos and found this gem! I'm so gIad I took that peek.

She was 8 in the spring of 1932; that's how I came up with the year.
