DERBY -  A special story and playtime just for babies and toddlers at Derby Neck Library! 

We’ll start with some songs, stories, and lap bounces, followed by 20 mins or so of free play! We’ll have interactive toys perfect for those practicing tummy time up to those learning to stand and walk, such as shakers, interactive mats, water tables, and more!

This program is targeted to ages Birth – 3, but older siblings are welcome, too! No registration required, but sign up for our Youth Services mailing list to stay in the loop on cancellations by clicking here.

Griffin Hospital in Derby, Safe Kids to host session on safe sleep for infants

DERBY - Safe Kids Worldwide and Griffin Health are helping parents and caregivers of infants sleep a little easier by providing free education on ways to make sure their little ones are snoozing safely.

Griffin will host several free, interactive programs entitled “Safe Sleep for Your Baby” to teach how to reduce the risk of sleep-related causes of infant death. 

The next program will be June 24 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at Griffin Hospital, 130 Division St.

Parents and caregivers will learn about safe sleep practices, and the safe sleep myths and facts for infants under 1 year of age. Door prizes, raffles, and educational materials will be provided.

The sessions are open to anyone expecting a child and anyone caring for an infant under 1 year of age.

“Seeing a baby sleeping is a precious sight, especially for parents and caregivers who can get very tired caring for an infant,” said Kellett, of Griffin’s Community Outreach & Parish Nurse Department and Coordinator of the Safe Kids Greater Naugatuck Valley Coalition. “This grant will allow us to provide simple and effective sleep safety tips, so that parents can create a safe place for babies to sleep and nap.”

Griffin Health partners with Safe Kids as part of its ongoing effort to transform health care by not only treating illness, but also helping people stay healthy. 

Griffin actively empowers individuals to play an active role in their health and wellbeing by providing them with information, tools and support to care for themselves and their loved ones.

According to Safe Kids, unintentional suffocation is the leading cause of injury-related death among children under 1 year old. Also, nearly 3,500 infants die each year in the United States because of sleep-related reasons, including entrapment, strangulation and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

Recuperation journey: Baby goats

SEYMOUR - I met Bonnie and Clyde Sunday afternoon. 
The baby goats - sister and brother - visited Lizzie's Corner Consignment and Gifts, 36 Bank St. just in case anyone wanted to give them a hug!
They live at DeMartino Farm, 66 Old Ansonia Road.
The goats are almost two months old, they're starting to eat solid food, and as you can see they're quite cute!

Bonnie likes to pose. Her brother was too busy eating to notice the camera.

Annabella's Angels donates CuddleCot to Griffin Hospital in Derby

DERBY - The Childbirth Center at Griffin Hospital will be able to give parents who have a stillbirth or later term miscarriage extra time with their child thanks to a CuddleCot donation.

Annabella's Angels, a nonprofit that raises funds to donate CuddleCots throughout the state, presented the Childbirth Center staff with the $3,000 device and a specially-designed bassinette April 24.

The CuddleCot keeps the body of the departed child cool so parents can have time to be with their child, have family visit, take pictures, take hand molds and receive religious blessings.

“Infant death is a harsh reality we cannot prevent and we cannot always foresee,” said Annabella’s Angels President and Founder Jessica Ocasio. “When parents are forced to say goodbye so shortly after hello, every minute matters.”

Jessica Ocasio and her husband Matthew formed the nonprofit in memory of their daughter, Annabella Grace, who was delivered stillborn at 18 weeks. 

Annabella's Angels has placed CuddleCots in St. Mary's Hospital, Waterbury Hospital, Bristol Hospital, Hartford Hospital, and Bridgeport Hospital.

“We are very thankful to Jessica, Matthew, and everyone at Annabella’s Angels for this donation,” said Childbirth Center Clinical Director Marge Fischer, RNC, MSN, NEA-BC, C-EFM.
“The CuddleCot gives parents the precious gift of time with their child and can be a wonderful help in healing spiritually.”
