'Turnback Tuesday' features history of Christmas tree

'Turnback Tuesday' looks at some of the history of the Christmas tree.
For thousands of years, homes were decorated with evergreens for the Winter Solstice. Other early trees across northern Europe were cherry or hawthorn plants put into pots and brought inside so hopefully they would flower at Christmas time.
In Germany, the first Christmas trees were decorated with edible things such as sweets and fruit. Angels/fairies topped the tree that told the shepherds about Jesus and in Victorian times the trees were decorated with candles to represent stars.
Derby Public Library has on display several trees representing an era or decade. These trees were generously decorated by our patrons.
Please come in and visit and vote for your favorite tree.
The Library is at 313 Elizabeth St., Derby.

Thanks goes to the Derby Public Library staff for sharing interesting local history each week.

'Turnback Tuesday' (on Saturday) highlights history of Christmas tree

Turnback Tuesday looks at the history of the Christmas tree.
For thousands of years, homes were decorated with evergreens for the Winter Solstice (shortest day of the year.)
Other early trees across northern Europe were cherry or hawthorn plants put into pots and brought inside to hopefully flower at Christmas time.
In Germany, the first Christmas trees were decorated with edible things such as sweets and fruit. Trees were topped with angels/fairies that told the shepherds about Jesus.
In Victorian times, the trees were decorated with candles to represent stars.
And in case you missed it, the beautifully decorated Derby Green, replete with the city's tree and festive lighting, can be enjoyed in all its glory.

Thanks go to the Derby Public Library staff for sharing interesting history each week!

Recuperation journey: Christmas cactus running late

Much like yours truly, who continues to enjoy our tabletop Christmas tree today (Washington's birthday), our Christmas cactus is on a delayed schedule.

It started to bloom a couple of days ago.
And last week a friend posted a photo on Facebook that showed her Christmas cactus blooming.

Confused cacti, you could call them. ðŸŒµ ðŸŒµ ðŸŒµ

Recuperation journey: Tabletop tree, kitty, and me

I think I'll leave my cute little tree up for a few more weeks.
It's so cozy to have the colored lights brightening the room after the sun goes down.

Linus surprised me Monday by jumping up on the table, so it was time to take a photo.

He doesn't bother to jump up very much any more! I guess he only will do it only when the spirit moves him.
