Boys & Girls Club members receive college scholarships; congratulations all!

SHELTON - Congratulations to our “Club kids” from the Boys & Girls Club of the Lower Naugatuck Valley who received college scholarships totaling nearly $33,000 to help them pursue their secondary education after high school.

The scholarships are funded by philanthropists who are dedicated to seeing the next generation succeed.

With career choices ranging from criminal justice to social work, they are our future workforce and leaders, and we are so proud of them!

Community caravan slated to cheer Ansonia first grader facing illness

ANSONIA - Please mark your calendars!

Jeilany, a first grader at Mead has been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor.

She has an older brother at AMS and an older sister in grade 5 (also at Mead).

Guidance Counselor James Chester heard about this family and immediately jumped in to action to plan a "Joy for Jeilany." This car parade will be departing from Mead at 4 p.m. May 26.

The end destination is 35 Forest Ave.

Please join parade and bring joy to Jeilany!!

Valley United Way extends backpack-buying program deadline

This year, everything is a little different. That includes our return to school program.

Bringing the program back was important to our Corporate Volunteer Council (CVC) members, so we found a way!

We invite you to participate with us in the Prudential Cares pre-filled backpack buying program, which supports the Boys & Girls Club of the Lower Naugatuck Valley directly.

Here is how it will work:

• The items can be purchased online with the Purchase A Backpack button. During ‘checkout’, you can ship directly to the organization by choosing the Boys & Girls Clubs of Lower Naugatuck Valley organization at 1 Positive Place in Shelton.
• The Boys & Girls Club will distribute the backpacks and supplies to students in need as they return to school this year through their programs and in partnership programs at the Valley schools.

Torch Club shows appreciation to nurses at Griffin Hospital in Derby

DERBY- The Torch Club members of the Boys & Girls Club of the Lower Naugatuck Valley presented gift cards to Griffin Hospital nurses in appreciation for their dedicated service during the COVID pandemic.

Torch Club is the Boys & Girls Club's middle school youth leadership program where members elect officers and work together to implement activities in four areas: service to Club and community; education; health and fitness; and social recreation. 

All fundraisers and events are planned and implemented by the Torch Club members, as are the donation recipients.

This year, the Torch Club chose the Griffin Hospital nurses, understanding that as difficult as the COVID-19 pandemic has been for kids like them, it was even more challenging for those on the front lines in health care.

Rochelle, Griffin Health schedule 3 mobile clinics to Vax the Valley

State Rep. Kara Rochelle, D-Ansonia and Derby, and Griffin Hospital have coordinated three mobile vaccine clinics with local partners for Ansonia and Derby residents. 

These are walk-up clinics and no appointment is required.
The clinics are scheduled for the following dates:

• April 26 from 4-7 p.m. at Iglesia de Dios Nuevos Comienzos, 101 Elizabeth St., Derby.
• April 28 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club of the Lower Naugatuck Valley, 28 Howard Ave., Ansonia.
• April 30 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Abundant Life Fellowship Ministries, 195 N. Main St., Ansonia.

The clinics will administer the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines. 

Residents of Ansonia and Derby must bring photo ID and proof of residence. Insurance is not required, but residents who have insurance should bring their insurance card. 

Vaccines will be administered on a first come, first served basis while supplies last.

"These clinics are a way for residents who are having difficulty accessing transportation or securing an appointment to get vaccinated against COVID-19. The most important part of moving the Valley forward from the pandemic is ensuring our friends and neighbors can protect themselves against the virus," said Rochelle. 

"Thank you to Griffin Hospital for being a strong partner on this initiative as well as Pastor Ulysses and Leslie Youngblood from Abundant Life Fellowship Ministries and the Life, Health, and Wellness Center, respectively, Pastor Dennis Maroquin of Iglesia de Dios Nuevos Comienzos, and Breon Sanders, Unit Director for the Joel E. Smilow Clubhouse of the Boys and Girls Club of the Lower Naugatuck Valley, for always lending a helping hand to our community and making these spaces available for residents to receive their COVID-19 vaccine."

Boys and Girls Club opens registration for summer camp in Shelton, Ansonia

The Boys & Girls Club of the Lower Naugatuck Valley has opened registration for its 2020 Summer Camp. 

Registration is first-come, first-served for all nine weeks of camp, which opens on June 22 and closes on Aug. 21. 

Summer Camp will run in two locations—the Raymond P. Lavietes Clubhouse in Shelton and the Joel E. Smilow Clubhouse in Ansonia. 

Cost is $250 per child per week, and the hours are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. 

Children will participate in a variety of activities throughout the day, including arts and crafts, outdoor activity—including our Splash Pad for our Shelton Clubhouse—indoor exercise, movies, and educational activities. Each week will feature a special theme. 

Camp is certified by the State of Connecticut, and our staff are certified in first aid and CPR.

Save the date: Celebrate Shelton to host tree lighting

SHELTON - Celebrate Shelton will host its 5th Annual Community Tree Lighting at 6 p.m. Nov. 30 at Veterans Memorial Park.
The event will feature hot cocoa and cookies, caroling, and a special visit from Santa 

Members of the Keystone Club from the Boys & Girls Club of the Lower Naugatuck Valley will bring joy and cheer to the event as they do every year.

Contest at BAD SONS in Derby to benefit LNV Boys and Girls Club

DERBY - BAD SONS Beer Co., 251 Roosevelt Drive, will hold a wings eating contest from noon-10 p.m. Oct. 7. 

The wings are from the nearby Dew Drop Inn, 25 North Ave.

Registration open for Commodore Hull 5K Road Race in Shelton, Derby

SHELTON - Registration for the 2017 Commodore Hull Thanksgiving Day 5K Road Race through downtown Shelton and Derby is open.

The Boys & Girls Club of the Lower Naugatuck Valley announced the Commodore Hull “crew” members have been named official starters for the Road Race.

The Boys & Girls Club, long-time beneficiary of the race, officially took over production of the 5K this year.

The race has become a noted Valley event every Thanksgiving and sells out quickly. 

The race has become so successful the number of timed runners has been increased several times, and is now limited to 750.

Registration closes as soon as that limit is reached, and no registrations are taken on race day.


Awards are presented to the first place male and female runners overall, and the top three male and female finishers in each division. 

Special awards go to the top three male and female runners in the High School Division.

Fast Track Timing LLC provides Disposable Bib Chip Technology. Race results are available almost instantaneously with their mobile app for IOS devices. 

High-quality shirts are provided to all registrants, as well as great "goody bags" for the first 500 registered runners.

The Farmer's Market on Canal Street and the Derby-Shelton Rotary Club Pavilion in Veterans Park serve as race headquarters wth plenty of refreshments available before and after the race.
