Recuperation journey: Looking at the sky

I attended a wonderful solo performance by singer/songwriter/guitarist Susan Carson on the Derby Green Thursday night. 

Inclement weather forced the concert to be  rescheduled and unfortunately there were only about a dozen people in attendance to enjoy the variety of music genres Carson played. 

See previous post about her performance.

The sky added to a magical evening of live music, featuring a pastel sunset and a beautiful supermoon. 

Tonight the moon will be 100 percent illuminated, a Full Harvest Moon. 

Singer/songwriter Susan Carson's solo performance rocks Derby Green

Singer/songwriter/guitarist Susan Carson of Stamford gave a wonderful performance Thursday night on the Derby Green. 

The city's final concert of the season was slated for Tuesday but inclement weather rescheduled Carson's appearance. 

The crowd may have been small but those in attendance enjoyed her eclectic mix of music, ranging from Blind Faith and Jefferson Starship to Johnny Cash.

Friends and I told Carson she needs to make a return visit to Derby next year!

Join yoga instructor Ms. Krista as she teaches kids yoga poses and mindful breathing techniques. Kids must wear comfortable clothing, bring a towel or yoga mat, and a water bottle.

Caregivers must remain in the library program room while child does yoga regardless of child’s age.

If your child is sick or not able to attend on the day of the program, please cancel at 203-924-1580 ext. 5108.

Derby Historical Society to host 2 events in Ansonia this weekend

Join the Derby Historical Society and the Daughters of the American Revolution as we accept a donation from the family of Lucinda Tomko of various historical documents and journals from the Colonial Period in Derby and Ansonia. 

The documents will be on display for your viewing at this time.

In honor of the Rev. Richard Mansfield's 300th birthday, the Derby Historical Society is inviting you to a sneak peek of his home. 

This historic building, built in 1700 and on the National Register of Historic Places, was purchased by the Derby Historical Society last year. Plans are underway to restore the building and move it to the same lot as the David Humphreys House (37 Elm St., Ansonia) to make it accessible to the public once again.

Join the Reverend, who holds the record for the longest-serving rectorship in the United States (72 years!) for a slice of cake and a peek inside his home.

FEMA, FCC to conduct nationwide test of emergency alert system Oct. 4

Dear Friends, FEMA and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will conduct a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) at approximately 2:20 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Oct. 4. The national test will consist of two portions, testing WEA and EAS capabilities. The WEA portion of the test will be directed to all consumer cell phones. The test message will display in either English or in Spanish, depending on the language settings of the wireless handset. The EAS portion of the test will be sent to radios and televisions. The purpose of the Oct. 4 test is to ensure that the systems continue to be effective means of warning the public about emergencies, particularly those on the national level. In case the Oct. 4 test is postponed due to widespread severe weather or other significant events, the back-up testing date is Oct. 11.  All wireless phones should receive the message only once. The following can be expected from the nationwide WEA test: Beginning at approximately 2:20 p.m. ET, cell towers will broadcast the test for approximately 30 minutes. During this time, WEA-compatible wireless phones that are switched on, within range of an active cell tower, and whose wireless provider participates in WEA, should be capable of receiving the test message.  For consumers, the message that appears on their phones will read: “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.” Phones with the main menu set to Spanish will display: “ESTA ES UNA PRUEBA del Sistema Nacional de Alerta de Emergencia. No se necesita acción.”

Recuperation journey: Looking at the sky (and more)

It has been an interesting morning so far.

I opened the door to get a photo of pastel clouds and ended up giving Rocky a scare, causing him to run up the tree.

As I was pointing and shooting toward the tree, a coyote came around the side of the house. I quickly tried to get a photo of him to complete the nature scene, but when he saw me he took off.
