Derby collecting pancake mix, syrup for St. Vincent de Paul food bank in February

"Dear City of Derby Colleagues and Friends,

"Thank you very much!  With your help, we delivered nearly 150 boxes of “Helper,” 24 pounds of coffee, and nearly 100 other food items to the St. Vincent DePaul Food Bank  [Wednesday].  

"If you still have any “Helper” please drop it off at City Hall or directly to St. Vincent DePaul Food Bank, 237 Roosevelt Drive, Derby, 203-734-7577.

"This month we will be collecting Pancake Mix or Syrup for the St. Vincent DePaul Food Bank.

"Please consider donating either a box of Pancake Mix or a bottle of syrup and bring it to the Town / City Clerk’s Office by the end of February and we will deliver them."

Griffin Hospital in Derby to host presentation on forgiveness

DERBY - The Community Health Resource Center at Griffin Hospital, 130 Division St. will host a free educational presentation on the Hawaiian Art of Forgiveness at 7 p.m. Feb. 20.

Join Ryan Jett, Hypnosis Center of Connecticut, for “Ho'Oponopono & The Ancient Hawaiian Art of Forgiveness,” a free discussion and program that helps one manage or eliminate negative emotions which have an adverse impact on health and relationships.

This program is part of a series of free, educational forums hosted by the Community Health Resource Center in an effort to help improve the health of the community.

The Community Health Resource Center at Griffin Hospital is a traditional library that provides an array of medical and health information, including a large collection of easy to read health and lifestyle related materials.

Kellogg Center in Derby to host programs for Scout badge requirements

DERBY - The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection’s Kellogg Environmental Center is hosting two programs in February focused on the Webelos Badge requirements for Into the Woods and Into the Wild.

Into the Woods  

Feb. 11 9:30 a.m.-noon 

Into the Wild

Feb. 25 9:30 a.m.-noon 

Scouts interested in either or both of these programs are encouraged to call and register to participate.  Both of these badges are elective adventures which can be used toward acquiring the Arrow of Light Badge.  

All activities provided on either program day are designed to focus on the information and requirements of the badge.   

Join naturalists as they lead you through activities for Into the Woods that investigate forestry and tree basics, including identification, parts, and history of forests in Connecticut.  

Into the Wild will utilize bird biology and behavior as part of the wildlife badge and help scouts appreciate the diversity of backyard and citizen science projects.  

Registration is required to participate in either badge day. The fee is $5 per Scout.  Adults are asked to stay with their Scouts for the program. There is no fee for adults.

Griffin Hospital in Derby to host free talks on diabetes medication

DERBY - The Diabetes Education & Support Group at Griffin Hospital will host two free presentations on diabetes medication Feb. 14 at 2:30 and 6:30 p.m. at the hospital, 130 Division St.

Pharmacist Matt Carrano, RPh, from Market 32/Price Chopper in Oxford will present “Ask the Pharmacist.” 

The presentation will discuss medications for treating diabetes and potential medication interactions, and he will be available for any medication-related questions. 

Carrano graduated from the University of Connecticut and was licensed to practice in 1985. 

He also will be bringing 25 glucometers, lancets and testing strips, courtesy of Market 32/Price Chopper.

The Diabetes Education and Support Group at Griffin Hospital will meet Feb. 14 from 2:30-3:30 and 6:30-7:30 p.m. in Childbirth Classroom A. 

Both talks will be in the hospital’s Childbirth Education Classroom A. 

There is free valet parking for the 2:30 p.m. session.

The Diabetes Education & Support Group meets September - June on the second Tuesday of each month to discuss the management of diabetes, its challenges, and day-to-day dietary concerns. Individuals with diabetes and their caregivers are welcome to attend.
