Crisco welcomes funding for schools in Woodbridge, Naugatuck

HARTFORD - State Sen. Joseph Crisco Jr., D-Woodbridge, announced the school building projects bill approved recently on a unanimous and bipartisan basis in the state Senate includes funds to repair the roof at the Beecher Road School in Woodbridge and additional funding for renovations and an extension at Naugatuck High School.

“There are about 2,000 students between these two schools who are going to have a better, safer and more productive educational experience thanks to the financial investments the state is making in their future,” Crisco said.

“I was proud to join with my Senate colleagues on both sides of the aisle to support this funding, which not only benefits students but helps keep the burden off of local property taxes as well.”

House Bill 7102 authorizes state grants for various school building projects, including:

· $3,717,917 for alterations to and replacement of a portion of the roof at the Beecher Road School. The grant will cover 27.86% of the school’s total estimated $13.345 million renovation cost, which includes the North roof replacement, HVAC work, windows, walls, lighting, an entry canopy, a pool cover and dehumidification, security upgrades and more.

· $849,075 more for renovations and an expansion to Naugatuck High School. The state had already approved $58,475,925 for the high school upgrades; it will now provide $59,325,000.

Tech Time offered at Derby Public Library

DERBY - The Derby Public Library offers monthly Tech Time sessions.  

Every third Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. and every third Thursday of the month

at 10 a.m. a staff member be on hand to answer all your tech-related questions and concerns.  

Whether you are having trouble downloading e-books, searching databases, completing on-line job applications, scanning/sending documents and photos, etc., your problems will be addressed. 

July sessions will be held at 6:30 p.m. July 15 and at 10 a.m. July 16.  

No registration is needed.

Victorian tea party planned at Kellogg Center in Derby

DERBY - Come and learn about Victorian culture at a Victorian Tea etiquette workshop at the Kellogg Environmental Center from 1-2:30 p.m. July 25.

This program will take visitors back in time to the late Victorian Era (1837-1901) when Frances Osborne Kellogg would have been a young lady in her 20s hosting and going to tea parties.

During the workshop, visitors will learn Victorian tea etiquette and the difference between the types of tea services, such as low and high tea.
Participants will understand and demonstrate the social “do’s and don’ts” of a tea party.

At the end of the program, visitors can take home handcrafted teas and teabags and tour the Osborne Homestead Museum where antique tea sets will be on display.

The workshop fee is $5, and refreshments will be served.

The Kellogg Environmental Center, 500 Hawthorne Ave., is operated by the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. It is open 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
