Shelton History Center features Brownson in noshavenovember series

Harry Brownson

Our final contender for #noshavenovember of course had to be Mr. Harry Brownson!
Harry Brownson, part of the last family to live in the Shelton History Center's Brownson House, is shown here c. 1900.
He was a lifelong farmer who preferred to use his horse team instead of a tractor well into his twilight years.

Shelton History Center highlights interesting beard from days gone by

James Beardsley Wheeler of Thompson Street in Shelton was a lifelong nonconformist.

During the Civil War, when he was in his 20s, he was a conscientious objector.  He had his own printing press, which he used to publish his own tracts, book and the Funny Graphics, an odd collection of 19th century philosophy.

Don't forget to look back at our past #noshavenovember posts and decide who has your favorite look!

Shelton History Center chooses Henry Brownson for 2nd best facial hair

... for NoShaveNovember

SHELTON - Our second contender at Shelton History Center for best facial hair this #noshavenovember is Mr. Henry Brownson.
This October 1869 wedding photograph of Henry I. Brownson and Anna Maria Booth shows off Brownson's impressive facial hair.
He had purchased the home now known as the Brownson House in 1866.
The couple had four children and the only boy, Harry Booth Brownson, is half of the couple that the Brownson House now covers with its 1913 interpretation of the house at the Shelton History Center at 70 Ripton Road.
