Rochelle, The WorkPlace to partner for virtual employment forum

State Rep. Kara Rochelle, D-Ansonia, Derby, is partnering with The WorkPlace President and CEO, Joe Carbone, and Vice President of Business Engagement, Mike Morgan, for a Virtual Forum on Employment Resources at 3 p.m. Monday, March 28 via Zoom.
People can register for the virtual event by visiting https://bit.ly/3CNL7sN.

During the event, attendees will learn about the WorkPlace's innovative Platform to Employment program, which helps unemployed individuals build their skills and connects them to employment opportunities. The program has helped over 80 percent of participants secure employment.

"The WorkPlace offers a variety of programs to help people advance their skills and overcome barriers to securing a good-paying job," Rochelle said. “I am pleased to host this virtual discussion with Joe Carbone and Mike Morgan to highlight the Platform to Employment program and how it can help people who are experiencing long-term unemployment get back to work."

The program helps prepare long-term unemployed individuals for career opportunities by addressing the skill loss and social and emotional challenges resulting from being out of the workforce.

The Platform to Employment program matches participants with openings at local companies on a trial basis and The WorkPlace funds their salaries. During this period, participating workers can demonstrate their ability to perform the job while the employer evaluates their work.

The Platform to Employment program is offered in Bridgeport, Hartford, New Haven, Norwich, and Waterbury.

The WorkPlace serves Southwestern Connecticut and offers a variety of job training and employment support programs for young adults, older workers, veterans, and more.

Klarides, Carpino back bill to help recovering addicts find employment

HARTFORD - The state legislature’s Labor Committee recently moved legislation forward that will help individuals recovering from substance abuse find quality employment opportunities.
The legislation, co-sponsored by Republican Leader Themis Klarides (R-Derby) and state Rep. Christie Carpino (R-Cromwell), was approved to go to the House of Representatives as a result of the committee’s vote on the bill.

Klarides said, “It’s important to consider all available resources when it comes to helping our neighbors, friends, or colleagues who are recovering from addiction. Addiction isn’t prejudiced and anyone can fall victim to it. In light of the ongoing opioid crisis, it’s critical that we do not stigmatize or make it harder for people who are trying to make a positive turn in their lives. I commend the action of the committee and look forward to shepherding this bill through the entire legislative process.”

The bill establishes a task force to investigate strategies to increase employment opportunities for people recovering from substance abuse.
The task force’s appointments will be determined through legislative leadership. Prior to the beginning of next session, the task force will present its findings and put forth recommendations for future legislation and community action.
“I spoke with constituents on the road to recovery about the hurdles when it comes to securing meaningful employment. The continuum of care for those battling addiction can be improved if there is a mechanism to connect those in recovery programs to potential employers. If we are truly in the business of improving people’s lives, this is a step in the right direction towards helping a very vulnerable population,” said Carpino.
After the positive action of the committee, both Klarides and Carpino hope when this comes up for a vote in the House of Representatives it will be acted upon favorably.

Job fair held for displaced workers at facilities in Shelton, Stratford

SHELTON - Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce President William Purcell said today a special job fair was held Wednesday at Altice USA (formerly Cablevision).

He said the fair was "a great success." The event featured 24 participating companies and several hundred candidates attended.

In an effort to assimilate these impacted employees into the local economy, Purcell said the Chamber was pleased to join with Cablevision, the Connecticut Department of Labor and The WorkPlace, Inc. in hosting a job fair exclusively for these employees.

Participating companies included Barnum Financial, Basement Systems, 3PL Worldwide, Sikorsky, A Lockheed Martin Company, Webster Bank, Curtiss Ryan Honda, Peralta Design, Sikorsky Credit Union, Housatonic Community College, Griffin Hospital, Post University, The WorkPlace, Inc. and the Connecticut Department of Labor, and more.
