Griffin Hospital and The Valley Senior Services Council will host a free talk on summer safety for those caring for seniors.


DERBY - Griffin Hospital and The Valley Senior Services Council invite caregivers – especially those caring for seniors - to talks on summer safety and caregiver resources. 

The talks are part of a four-part series to help provide education, information, and support.

On May 17, representatives from Voices Against Lyme Disease and health experts from Griffin will present “Summer Safety - Lyme Disease and Skin Cancer,” with information on how to help prevent and treat these diseases.

The series wraps up June 7 with “Caring for the Caregiver,” which will provide tips on how caregivers can take care of themselves so they can better care for others.

Both presentations will start at 5:15 p.m. at Griffin Hospital, 130 Division St. 
There will be a free light meal provided by Valley United Way and Griffin Hospital Lifeline at 4:30 p.m. before each talk.

Registration is required for each event by calling 203-732-1511 or visiting griffinhealth.org/events.

DERBY - Griffin Hospital and The Valley Senior Services Council invite caregivers - especially those caring for seniors - to a free four-part series to help provide education, information, and support.

The series starts March 15 with “Patient and Family Engagement,” a panel discussion on the “hows” and “whats” when seeking care or assistance from hospitals, skilled nursing care, assisted living facilities, home care, and local or state agencies.

On April 19, the talk will be “Advanced Care Planning,” providing information about advance directives the tools needed to help make decisions about care when one is unable to speak for oneself.

DERBY - Griffin Hospital’s Healthy U program and The Valley Senior Services Council will host free presentations and information on caregiving resources in the community at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the hospital, 130 Division St.

“Get to Know Your Resources” will feature a variety of presentations on caregiving from area resources, including Wesley Village UMH, Sunset Shores, Griffin Hospital Lifeline, Alzheimer’s Association, TEAM, Valley Transit District, and Agency on Aging. 
The presentations will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A.

The talk is final part of a series that focuses on providing information, resources, and support to caregivers of seniors, especially those of “the sandwich generation,” who are caring for an elderly loved one while still managing work and care of their children. 
However, the series will share information and resources that are beneficial to anyone caring for another person.

A light dinner sponsored by Valley Senior Services Council and their Valley United Way Special Needs Grant and Griffin Hospital Lifeline will be provided at 4:30 p.m. 
Participants are invited to bring their loved one for whom they provide care.

Space is limited; registration is required.

DERBY - Griffin Hospital’s Healthy U program and The Valley Senior Services Council will host a talk to help caregivers keep their loved ones safe and independent at 5:30 p.m. April 20 at the hospital, 130 Division St.

Dawnmarie Hunter, of Visiting Nurse Association of South Central CT, and Kim Vertrees, Community Liaison with Connecticut In-Home Assistance Home care, will present “Keeping Your Loved One Independent and Safe.” The talk will explain the difference between medical and non-medical home care, including when and why you need it, how to search for it, and how to pay for it.

A Griffin Hospital physical therapist will also discuss fall safety and demonstrate exercises for balance and core strengthening, and Tara Kelly, of Griffin Hospital Lifeline, will present information on home safety and preventing avoidable fall injuries.

Griffin Hospital Community Outreach Program will present a “toolbox” of resources for caregivers to help a loved one manage their disease and gain control of their health.

DERBY - Griffin Hospital’s Healthy U program and The Valley Senior Services Council will host a series of four talks on caregiving this spring.

The series will focus on caregivers for seniors, especially those of “the sandwich generation,” who are caring for a senior loved one while still managing work and care of their children; however the series will share information and resources beneficial to anyone caring for another person.

A light dinner sponsored by Valley Senior Services Council and their Valley United Way Special Needs Grant and Griffin Hospital Lifeline will be provided at 4:30 p.m. before each talk. 

There will be free raffles and VSSC members representing various area home care and senior living services will be available to share resources and to speak individually with attendees. 
Participants are invited to bring their loved one for whom they provide care.

The series starts with “Care for the Caregiver” at 5:30 p.m. March 23. Dr. Beverley Kidder, director of Agency on Aging of South Central Connecticut and author of “The Gift of Caregiving,” will share her caregiving experience and tips for dealing with the stress of caregiving. 

Laura Murphy, Planetree Services supervisor at Griffin Hospital, will discuss and demonstrate the therapeutic benefits of complementary healing methods including guided imagery, meditation, and aromatherapy. 
Information on area caregiver support resources will also be available.
