Griffin Hospital in Derby offers free weight-loss seminars in June


Griffin Bariatrics will offer free virtual presentations on its weight-loss services throughout June.


Led by Griffin Hospital Director of Bariatrics Dr. Abe Fridman, these seminars will explain how bariatric surgery can help patients lose significant amounts of weight, enhance their health, and provide long-term well-being. Additionally, techniques, support programs, pre- and post-operative expectations, and insurance questions are also discussed.

Upcoming seminars will be held on June 17 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. and June 23 from 12-1 p.m.

Griffin Hospital in Derby offers Healthy U lecture series


 DERBY – The Healthy U Lecture Series at the Community Health Resource Center at Griffin Hospital will provide an in-depth discussion about fitness and preventive health with Cardio Health & Well-Being Management on April 15 at 6 p.m.

Led by Griffin Health physicians and experts in cardiovascular and internal medicine, this free program will feature trusted medical insight into fitness, including its heart health benefits, examples of beneficial exercises and risk factors for cardiovascular disease, and how primary care physicians help individuals manage their health through annual wellness checkups and preventive health measures, including recommended screenings based on risk factors. 


Attendees will also learn about Griffin Health resources available to help promote an improved well-being and sample healthy food. There will be ample time for participants to ask the medical experts questions.


The Healthy U Lecture Series offers physician-led presentations and discussions to help individuals better understand how the human body functions and be empowered to manage their health and well-being. 

Griffin Health medical experts will provide in-depth information about the body’s systems to best explain health topics including diabetes prevention, cancer awareness, mental wellness, heart health, nutrition, and exercise for individuals who want to learn more about wellness and disease prevention.

Healthy U will be held on the third Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. in the Community Health Resource Center. 

The topics for each month are: May - Women's Health; June - Men's Health, Prostate Cancer, and the Health Initiative for Men (HiM); July – Self-Care and Mental Wellness; August – Breathing and Pulmonary Care; September – Hispanic Health Awareness; October - Cancer Prevention and Genetic Testing; November – Diabetes Management and Prediabetes Prevention; and December - Healthy Aging.

Griffin, Agency on Aging to offer presentations for Valley seniors


Griffin Health and the Agency on Aging of South-Central Connecticut will host an interactive program designed this April to help Valley seniors get ready for spring activities and preserve their independence.

Caregivers from Griffin Health’s Physical Medicine will lead Body Mechanics and Adaptive Equipment, a free presentation on how to prevent injury while raking, shoveling and gardening, and discussion about how supportive/adaptive equipment can help seniors maintain independence. 

Griffin Health caregivers will also offer free blood pressure screenings and consultation. 

The presentations are scheduled for April 2 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at Ansonia Senior Center, April 6 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at Seymour Senior Center, April 9 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at Oxford Senior Center, April 22 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at Shelton Senior Center, and April 23 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at Derby Neck Library.


These offerings are part of the AgeWell program, which is co-sponsored by Griffin Health and the Agency on Aging of South-Central Connecticut to increase access to care and prevent disease in the Valley senior community through a series of health screenings and healthy living education sessions each month. Periodically, this program provides nutritiously balanced and delicious foods for attendees.

Griffin Health, Agency on Aging to host fitness talks for seniors in April


Griffin Health and the Agency on Aging of South-Central Connecticut are hosting a series of fitness talks and free blood pressure screenings for seniors throughout the Valley in April.


Caregivers from Griffin Hospital’s Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine Team will present “Building a Solid Core,” a free presentation that identifies the muscles that make up the body’s core, explains why a strong core is important (especially in regards to fall prevention) and demonstrates exercises to strengthen the core. 

Griffin Health caregivers will also be offering free blood pressure screenings and consultations.

The events are scheduled for April 3 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at the Ansonia Senior Center; April 7 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at the Seymour Senior Center; April 23 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the Shelton Senior Center; and April 24 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at Derby Neck Library.

Plumb Memorial Library in Shelton to hold presentations on hiking


This talk is designed for people who are seeking the skills and confidence to explore Shelton’s 32-mile trail system (and beyond). 

Topics include being prepared, finding your way, evaluating trail hazards, and the benefits of local hiking. How do you keep from getting lost? What if there’s a bear? What’s the best way to avoid ticks? Find the answers to these common questions and gain some practical tips for the trails.

Teresa Gallagher has been the city’s Natural Resource Manager since 2006, making use of her degrees in environmental science and geology. She supports the Shelton Trails Committee and has been involved with the creation and maintenance of the City’s trail system since the mid-1990s.

The sessions will be held at Plumb Memorial Library.

DERBY - Derby Neck Library will host a presentation at 6:30 p.m. March 5 to cover the basic principles of genealogy and family history research to help you start uncovering the mysteries of your own family tree.
