DERBY - The Diabetes Education & Support Group at Griffin Hospital will host a free Q&A with pharmacists at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the hospital.

Griffin Health Director of Pharmacy Services Lisa Jaser, Pharm D, will lead a casual Q & A session on any and all medication questions. 

Medication errors injure hundreds of thousands of people every year in the United States. However, most medication errors can be prevented by open communication between the pharmacist and patient, as well as the patient’s caregivers. 
Participants are encouraged to bring their medications, and ask questions about what it is supposed to do, how to take or use the medication, what to do if a dose is missed, and what activities, foods and other medications should be avoided while taking the medication.

DERBY - The Diabetes Education & Support Group at Griffin Hospital will host a free discussion on diabetes and fall risk at 2:30 p.m. Feb. 11 at the hospital.

Studies have shown that older adults diagnosed with diabetes have a higher risk of falling and fall more often. They are also more likely to suffer a serious injury from a fall, including a broken hip.

Lifeline Program Coordinator at Griffin Hospital Vanessa Shimer will talk about why individuals diagnosed with diabetes are at a higher fall risk and what they can do to help protect themselves from debilitating fall injuries.

DERBY - In recognition of National Diabetes Awareness Month, Griffin Health is offering two talks and a screening to help educate the community and promote preventative health.

On Nov. 12, Griffin’s Diabetes Education and Support Group will discuss healthy eating in preparation for the holiday season. 

Certified diabetes instructor Mary Swansiger, BSN, MPH, will present “Making Healthy Swaps in Cooking” from 2:30-3:30 p.m. at Griffin Hospital, 130 Division St.

This open discussion will include ways to reduce sugar intake without using artificial sweeteners.

The Diabetes Education & Support Group meets September-June on the second Tuesday of each month to discuss management of diabetes, its challenges, and day-to-day dietary concerns. 

Individuals with diabetes and their caregivers are welcome to attend.

Foot screening event

From 5-7 p.m. Nov. 14, the Comprehensive Wound Care Center at Griffin Hospital will host a free diabetic foot screening event. Each screening will take about 10 minutes and will include consultation with a podiatrist if needed.

Foot problems are common with diabetes. Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes cause damage to blood vessels and peripheral nerves that can result in peripheral artery disease and peripheral neuropathy.

The screenings will be first come, first served, however registration is required by visiting the Griffin Hospital events calendar at griffinhealth.org/events or by calling 203-732-1511. For any questions, call 203-732-7140.

Self-management

From 6-7:30 p.m. Nov. 19 endocrinologist Dr. Chi Tang, of Griffin Faculty Physicians, will discuss Advanced Diabetes Self-Management. 

The ideal audience will be people who know the basics in diabetes or have already completed Griffin’s six-week Diabetes Self-Management Workshop and would like to gain a deeper understanding to become more independent in their diabetes management.

Wound care specialists from The Comprehensive Wound Healing Center at Griffin Hospital will discuss the importance of proper foot care, screening and hygiene as it relates to preventing diabetic foot ulcers.

DERBY - The Diabetes Education & Support Group at Griffin Hospital will host a free discussion of diabetes medications at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 10 at the hospital, 130 Division St.

Endocrinologist Dr. Chi Tang of Griffin Faculty Physicians will discuss the pros and cons of various diabetes medications and how to adjust insulin dose, including an insulin pump. 

The talk will be based on questions from attendees looking to gain a deeper understanding of diabetes to become more independent in their diabetes management.

Certified Diabetes Educator Mary Swansiger, BSN, MPH, will host “Managing Your Diabetes Throughout the Summer,” an open discussion of what individuals with diabetes need to know for summer, including choosing wisely at barbeques and parties, healthier recipes and food swaps, skin care, travel tips, and emergency preparedness.

DERBY - The Diabetes Education & Support Group at Griffin Hospital will host two free presentations on mental health issues for individuals diagnosed with diabetes May 14 at 2:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. at the hospital, 130 Division St.

In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, Certified Diabetes Educator Mary Swansiger, BSN, MPH, will facilitate an open discussion on mental health issues and diabetes, especially depression and diabetes distress. 

The talk will cover the signs and symptoms of depression, how depression and diabetes are linked, how depression is treated in people who have diabetes, and self-management tools.

The presentations will be in the hospital’s Dining Room Meeting Room 1.

DERBY – The Diabetes Education & Support Group at Griffin Hospital will host two free presentations about how individuals with diabetes can benefit from annual wellness checkups at 2:30 and 6:30 p.m. April 9 at the hospital.

Regular visits with a diabetes care team are very important to diabetes management. Certified Diabetes Educator Mary Swansiger, BSN, MPH, will lead “Getting the Most Out of Your Office Visits,” an open discussion about preparing for visits to the doctor, questions to ask, blood glucose tracker tips, and follow-up visits, including tests and checkups. 

The talk will also cover working with care providers to set diabetes care goals for your blood sugar, A1c, weight, blood pressure, medication schedule, meal plan and physical activity.

The presentations will be in Dining Room Meeting Room 1. The hospital is at 130 Division St.
