Famously known as Brownie Castle, it was located on Academy Hill in Derby.
A colonial saltbox house built in 1686 by Samuel Bowers, it was later owned by W.S. Browne who lived there for more than 50 years, hence “Brownie Castle”.
To be a colonial-style house, the chimney is located in the center as well as the front door, with equal number of windows on both sides. Thus, the home is symmetrical. A saltbox has a low back roof line.
Brownie Castle had a spectacular view of the Housatonic River going towards Long Island Sound.
